That was a good game. I was in my first year at LSU and they had a lot students watching the game on TV in the Union. Wasn't the president of the U.S. at that game?

Nixon and future president George HW Bush were there plus other notable politicians and famous people. I knew the game was huge when they showed Colonel Sanders in the stands in his white suit, that was big to me as a kid because I loved his chicken….haha

Please research the classic 1969 Arkansas Texas game, which contributed a lot toward deciding the national title.

The game was moved by abc to create the game of the century..

ABC, specifically Roone Arledge and Beano Cook, moved the 1969 Arkansas vs. Texas football game from its usual October date to the end of the season to cap off the centennial of college football, creating the highly anticipated "Game of the Century" that decided the Southwest Conference championship and a potential national championship berth. The move was a gamble that paid off, as both teams were undefeated and highly ranked by December,

If arkansas ever wins another national championship which will never happen again, then we can talk rivalry,
Thats the only reason arkansas ever crossed our minds 60 years ago is cuz they were a proven national champion.
They haven't crossed our minds since, just a bump in the road

There was a time a car with Texas plates couldn't buy gasoline in Arkansas. Had to fill up in Texarkana, TX. before heading to Fayette-nam or Little Rock.

False.

Arkansas was a bigger rival than A&M back in the 60s and 70s. A&M started cheating in the 80s and that game became more important after Arkansas went to the SEC in 1991.

Moral to the story:
Sometimes, it does pay to cheat.

We've never cared outside of the 60s, even when Arkansas was good. But the Texas game is a jihad for them.

1960’s, 70’s, & 80’s were ultimate SWC matchups between Arkansas and Texas.

17 of those games saw both teams ranked in the top 25. 11 of those games both were ranked inside the top 10. Texas won 12 conference titles in those three decades and Arkansas won 9. Texas claims 3 National titles in that era and Arkansas officially claims 1, but also has a claim to another.

Within league play, it was the most competitive rivalry in those last thirty years of the SWC. Game of the Century in 1969. No.1 Texas going and getting slaughtered in 1982 in Fayetteville. From 1960-1989 Arkansas and Texas were two of the winningest programs in the nation.

aTm only won the league 5 times in that timeframe and no national relevance since 1939, and Houston won the league 4 times.

Arkansas will become 1 of Texas 3 opponents for the sheer fact the SEC will continue to give Texas the easiest possible schedule because Texas is paying them 7 to 8 figures to receive the easiest schedule.

The 1960s were a special time for the rivalry. There's no question about that. Grafting on the 70s and 80s to it helps your agenda, but it doesn't make it accurate.

1981 is the year Arkansas walloped Texas for our only loss of the year. We had beaten #14 Miami, #10 OU in the two weeks prior, then defeated the Pony Express SMU team the week after ranked #8 at the time (Arkansas and SMU would tie that year).

I remember very clearly listening on the radio in befuddlement (because the game wasn't televised) that we could get smashed that badly. But part of it was because of where it was on the schedule.

The next year, 1982, they moved the game to the end of the season, and Texas crushed the Razorbacks at home. Lou Holtz would be pushed out the next season. From 1984 to 1997 Texas took a step back from fielding competitive football teams for the most part. Before Arkansas left for the SEC there were 3 SWC series more important. SMU before they were given the death penalty. A&M, where they won 10 of 11 games from 1984 to 1994 and completely redefined that series for a generation of fans from both programs, and UH, which employed the run and shoot, including winning the Heisman for Andre Ware. They blasted Texas several times in the late 80s culminating in the 1990 game which was the loudest any Texas fan had ever attended at Memorial stadium for a couple of decades. When Texas won the fans stormed the field and tore down the goal posts. I don't know of another instance where that ever happened. Certainly not for any Arkansas games.
