7 years at Wisconsin: 24 games against top 25 opponents with a 10-14 record.
5 years at Arkansas: 31 games against top 25 opponents with a 7-24 record.
Basically Wisconsin steamrolled a bunch of shitty teams and lost to most of the good teams they played under Bert. Arkansas also lost to most of the good teams they played under Bert but it went from 1/4 of the schedule to 1/2 of the schedule.

He got paid, he ate and drank, and knocked up his high class call girl wife.
Football became secondary to all that.

he kept trying to out-physical teams with big but slow linemen; just a recipe for disaster in the sec where speed is key;
chad morris, on the other end of the spectrum, tried to out-speed big dudes with tiny dudes;
neither approach works, as we saw

1. Beliema liked to drink like a frat boy in Animal House.
2. Beliema never got the fact you have to have speed in the SEC and recruited like we were in the B1G.
3. After AD Long rewarded him with a one-way 15 mil buyout he thought he was untouchable and became complacent.

Also Wisconsin doesn't have Dickson Street.
From the stories I've heard, he was a total drunk up here as well that spent a good portion of his time chasing coeds. The difference is that:
1) Alvarez ran the program anyway, so Bert could pretty much do whatever he wanted in his spare time.
2) Being a fall down, sloppy drunk is the norm in Wisconsin. That lifestyle isn't embraced quite as openly in most parts of the South.
Once Bret was out on his own, he was way in over his head and didn't have the work ethic needed to compete and maintain his own program.

1) Drinking problem...which led to Pittman leaving. (I think has fixed that though)
2) His style of football was on its way out.

Honestly he was pretty close to having success. In 2014 and 2015 we probably lost more one-score games than any other P5 team in the country and with a decent kicker he may have won 8-10 games. He nearly beat Alabama in 2014 but lost by one point on a missed extra point. Very similar to Scott Frost and Nebraska this season.
He had a 9-4 season within his reach in 2016 as well but blew two huge halftime leads to Missouri and Virginia Tech back to back to end the year so we finished 7-6 instead, or he may have gotten one more year.
I think his drinking eventually caught up to him and he didn't take recruiting as seriously as he should have after the first couple of years. Also didn't offer guys like Isaiah Simmons or Tre Norwood who are now in the NFL who wanted to go to Arkansas at one point - massive misses.

Pretty much sums it up.
Off the sauce, Bert can win. On the sauce and Jen, no bueno... and all you get is Fat Bert.

quote:Alvarez was still running Wisconsin. That's why they didn't skip a beat when Bert left. If he doesn't have good assistants to hold his hand he's a complete liability. Beilema's tenure at Arkansas would have been cut in half without Dan Enos and Sam Pittman.
He did a good job at Wisconsin.

He was an arrogant alcoholic who didn't put in the work.
