So your biggest city is Little Rock? pop < 200k. That's a decent sized suburb in STL or KC. Your whole state has about the same number of people as the STL metro.

Why? Poor soil? Dumb initial settlers that didn't know how to organize? Geography? Lack of rivers with good shipping lanes? You have the Mississippi down your east side so that excuse doesn't fly.

I guess its nice to have a whole state of backwoods for good deer hunting. Anything else noteworthy?

So? Mizzou has 3 massive cities in state and the only team worth a damn in that entire place is the St. Louis Cards. You'd think that a team in the middle of all that population would be able to do better than 42-10 and 59-42.

Poor troll btw.

I don't want to speak for Arky fans, but you would think geography had something to do with it. It sort of has a W Virginia type of appeal. So maybe the factors are:

1. The Ozarks
2. Meth
3. Walmart likes it that way

Our entire state has less than 3M people. NWA actually has more people than little rock, it's just spread out amongst a cluster of cities: FayettevilI knowe, Bentonville, Rogers, Springdale.

Not sure why the population is so much lower than similarly sized states. I live in Fort Smith and most college graduates move to other states for better job opportunities. The cost of living is low here but so are wages. Many people find they can move to dallas, st. Louis, or tulsa and make more money.

Because of our low population we'll always be fighting an uphill battle in regards to recruiting for college.

As Lewis once said, "Don't believe I would have said that."

I would not put that dump of a city St.Louis in any post.

Just my opinion.

I think most Arkansans would prefer the no cities part. I would live in NWA or one of the nicer LR suburbs any day of the week.

St. Louis was founded in the 1760s and soon after a French lieutenant governor moved there and started giving out land grants, so there was a government-organized settlement of the area.

Arkansas had a few French trading posts in the 1700s, but did not really begin to be settled until the formation of the Arkansas Territory by the US government in 1819.

There was a town in Arkansas across the river from Memphis called Hopefield, and was the terminal point of a railroad that rant east and west. It was pretty successful until Memphis was captured by the Union. Confederate soldiers fled across the river to Hopefield and some of them began an insurgency that was later quelled by burning Hopefield to the ground.
