No it wasn’t. He has plenty of notable accomplishments, including making Rutgers relevant which is miraculous.

re: Are bad coaching hires really to blame for Vol woes?
Top 5 players in TN for 2021:

#58 4 star Clemson
#91 4 star Michigan
#158 4 star Ohio State
#174 4 star Notre Dame
#205 4 star Clemson

There are already 12 4-stars in the 2022 Composite for next year, including the nation's #1 recruit.

Knoxville football is better, Memphis football is better, Murfreesboro football is better. The private schools in particular around the state started focusing more heavily around 10 years ago and the overall level of play has risen rapidly.

UT coaches haven't been able to lock down the best of the best though, and its critical that whomever the next HC is does so.

UT is in a death spiral perpetuated by bad coaching hires, awful ADs, a toxic program culture and grossly unrealistic fan expectations. They’ll likely never recover.

It will take a very special hire.

And running off Fulmer.

Agreed !

The Schiano and Al Golden coaches of the world aren’t the answer.

A few years ago I would have laughed this off. Now I tend to agree

But I don’t think the fans are the biggest issue. Loyalty is pretty high. It’s amazing UT still has fans at all.

re: Are bad coaching hires really to blame for Vol woes?
I was a UT student from 2010-2014 and now I am back for grad school. In undergrad we thought we were at rock bottom. Now that I’m back, literally nothing has changed, and in fact it’s gotten worse. I don’t know what we can do to turn it around at this point, other than hire a Proven championship winning coach, which we won’t do.

Tennessee will get better when Phil Fulmer is no longer in the picture. He is a cancer on the whole program. Has his fingers in too many places.

I begrudgingly agree.

I’m a Major’s guy but there’s always that National Championship.

The price has been high, though.

Someone will have to explain the euphoric dogma for Schiano’s coaching ability.

For one, Schiano took over a Rutgers team that hadn't won a conference game in three years and made them competitive in the Big 10 right away in year one. They beat Michigan State and probably should have beaten Michigan and Illinois. The final scores against top 10 Indiana and Ohio State teams were also fairly respectable. Schiano has massively improved the Rutgers football program from what they were in years past.

Tennessee has consistently recruited pretty well the past few years. Sure, not good enough to be a contender but better than getting out scored 108-14 in the second half of the last 5 games.

Same with Clemson being an elite program

UT deserves it all. Karma has been made true.
Ol' Phil and Tennstud really made Bama pay didn't they!

Was it really worth it boys and girls? LMFAO!
Took Bama 10 years to shake off the effects of probation... Gonna be at least 20 for UT to wander through the desert. Feels good

Competive at Rutgers is a qualifier for elite success?

Al Golden receive your love as well?

Randy Edsall?

Were getting close then, 2001 was the last elite team in Knoxville.

Fulmer’s only interest is squeezing out every drop of praise from his championship team.
