Recruiting experts have labeled five-star quarterback and recent Texas commitment Arch Manning as many things.
But overrated has not been one of them.
Mike Farrell, the former national director of recruiting at Rivals and self-proclaimed "Godfather of Recruiting," believes that Manning would be a three-star recruit if his last name were not Manning.
"If his name was Arch Smith, I think he'd probably be a high three-star quarterback," Farrell said on the Daily Wistreaming show Crain and Company.
He may be the nephew of Super Bowl champions Peyton and Eli Manning, but Arch Manning is accomplished in his own right.
At 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, Arch Manning is the No. 1 player in the nation in the Class of 2023, according to Rivals, 247Sports and On3 Sports. With Isidore Newman as a junior last season, he threw for 1,913 yards and 26 touchdowns while also rushing for six scores and 381 yards.
And unlike his uncles, he started at Newman as a freshman and has led them to the semifinals of the Division III playoffs the last two seasons.
Farell believes Arch Manning hasn't "progressed" as a quarterback since his freshman season and that the level of competition he plays against blurs his quality as a prospect.
"When he has had to step up against other competition, especially in the playoff game where he looked awful, it just hasn't translated," Farrell said. "Every time I watch other quarterbacks in this class, it knocks Arch down in my head."

I'm not pulling against the guy or anything, but it is pretty obvious that he received a huge artificial rating bump because of his name.

Everyone in Louisiana already knew that Arch wasn’t a 5*. What blows my mind more than giving him a 5* because he is a manning is that he is #1 overall. The rest of college football will see for themselves soon enough

exactly, I'm not rooting for him to fail because of Texas or whatever, but the news was always ARCH MANNING WEARS A USC TROJANS HAT DURING DINNER AT CHILI'S and not videos of him throwing 50 yard dragons or running past 11 defenders

Mike Farrell is dumb as shite

This is getting blown out of proportion. By all accounts, Saban considered Holstein and Manning about even. Georgia and Texas both really wanted him as well. Perhaps he was overrated, but would every single recruiting service intentionally give a boost of a full two stars just because of the kid’s last name?

How many recruits are 5 stars because who is recruiting them? I still think the recruiting services main purpose is to bring the websites the maximum money vs accurate information.

Yes. Most of them make their ratings on what other people are rating them.

The fact that the Manning’s shielded him from the Elite 11 tells you everything you need to know about him. I can’t think of the last time the #1 rated QB in the class didn’t want to go out there amongst elite peers and compete.

Maybe they are actually decent at their job

The rate of players getting drafted exponentially increases as their star rating increases. 1% of one stars get drafted, 2% of two stars, 6% of three starts, 19% of four stars and 49% of five star.

You're absolutely correct, but in this case he's not wrong. Manning is not the #1 prospect, and he's not a five star without the Manning name.

I'm no expert, but these numbers sound like the kind of thing the best QB prospect in 1974 would have had, not 2021.

I mean, it's a Manning. I believe he will be good.

He takes it too far to the other extreme.
I do not think Arch is the number one recruit if his last name were not Manning. I think he is easily a four star and just outside of the top 10 quartebacks. But guys like Malachi Nelson, Nicholaus Iamaleava and Dante Moore have done far more on the field more consistently than Manning.

He is playing both sides of the argument in an attempt to stay relevant. After Arch committed in his instant analysis he called him the best prospect in the 2023 class by far and would have him as the top prospect even if his name was Doug Smith.
I guess all that changed over 1 month….or Farrell is a troll trying to monetize off both sides knowing how many clicks Arch gets

Someone posted pictures of the defenses he faced. 160# lbers and 130# dbs.
Its stark compared to the highest levels played across southern states h8ghest divisions.

Okay... so, Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, Kirby Smart, and just about every other big time coach and scout in the country was wrong. Never mind the fact that he has been heavily scouted since he could walk, or the fact that he's being coached by three, former NFL QBs (with two of them being HoF caliber).

And an NFL coach took Tebow in round one.
