It's much better to determine ranked wins using the final rankings.
Let me give you an example. At one point in 2014, Mississippi State defeated three straight top ten teams and skyrocketed to #1 in the first ever CFP poll. However, all three of those teams (#8 LSU, #6 Texas A&M, and #2 Auburn) finished at 8-5, and only Auburn finished ranked at #22.
Using the better measurement (final AP poll), Texas had the following wins over ranked teams in 2018:
- #4 Oklahoma
- #7 (tied) Georgia
