Ironically, the Utah and USCe losses were the 2 most decisive in Saban's tenure. Even though they had a chance in the 4th qtr against USC, it would have been a pity if Bama had won.
Utah thoroughly dominated the game from beginning to end. Even Javier Arenas's heroics could not overcome Utah's shocking LOS dominance.

Though Saban is respectful and gracious in victory or defeat, he is also very blunt and honest. It is a conundrum for him, plus he is always speaking to his team.

As others have pointed out, the number of times Alabama has just been beat toe to toe under Saban's run is like three or four times. They've happened, but it's been rare.
Almost all the other losses were indeed almost completely self inflicted.
Alabama almost always fields the better team, and it's hard to beat a team better than you without them helping you.
