No, and their coach knows it. Here is a transcription of his comments:

On the benefit of playing a team like Mississippi State in week one: I don't think there is any benefit in going to Starkville, Mississippi and playing those guys. (Laughs) You want to stay away from that. The only benefit is getting a check and coming on home. The only other thing is that it gives your guys the chance to go and play in that environment and experiencing that in an SEC environment on Saturday afternoons. You can match yourself with those guys. They're going to see that they will be able to make plays over the course of that game. It won't be so one-sided. We'll be able to make some plays and we're be able to draw from that and that's a positive. Do I want to play an 11-game SEC schedule? Heck no, unless they want to pay us a whole bunch of money. I don't want to do that.

They think because we lost our head coach we're going to suck this year.

Arnett did something phenomenal with the defense we had in Mike Leach's first year. He's a dang good coach and I'm glad he's now the head coach.

I think our new OC is going to do well with the players we bring back this year.

We're basically the same team that won 9 games last year except we have more experience and depth this year.

SE has some dudes and added some big transfers. They are picked to win the Southland.

I don’t think it will be a cakewalk for State

There is a glaring omission in this post.

What’s the omission? He talked about the coaching situation, you just cut it out of the quote

Yep.

2020-21: The Air Raid won't work in the SEC. State is going to finish last.
2023: State is not running the Air Raid and will miss Leach. State is going to finish last.

The truth is, most pundits are worthless. They do no research outside a handful of teams and just pencil in State last because they remember Croom teams.

Here's a list of teams that have finished last in the SEC West since State last did so in 2009 (three way tie at 3-5):

Texas A&M
Auburn (5x)
LSU
Arkansas (7x)
Ole Miss (3x)

Everyone but Alabama. Arkansas has finished last 7 times. Auburn 5. You get this lazy media and it turns into lazy fans who post stupid shite like "Anyone think Southeastern Louisiana could give Mississippi State a game?"

No one that lives in reality thinks this. It will be a 41-10 type game. You know what is more likely to happen than SLU coming within 4 touchdowns of Mississippi State? State beating LSU week 3. But next week it will be more of the same - Arizona is an upstart - they are going to go into Starkville and win.

Question - when is the last season that Mississippi State was not a Top 25 team at some point?

Let's quote the post for posterity's sake:

Don't act like he discussed the losing Leach and the impact of that. He glossed right over it, saying y'all are "basically the same team . . . except [y'all] have more experience and depth." Except you're not. The guy who put the whole damn team together is gone.

Now, I don't say all this to say I think y'all are going to suck. But I don't think y'all should expect 9 wins either. After all, y'all have only done that a handful of times in your putrid football history.

Another typical anc post. State finished dead last in the SEC West in 2020.

Regarding that 2009 season, State lost to the other two teams that finished 3-5. Y'all were very much dead last in the division that season.

Furthermore, where do you get your statistics from, dude? Auburn has finished last in the west twice since 2009.

2019.

Are you really claiming the 2020 season where y'all were ranked 1 week after beating a terrible LSU team but finished dead last in the division?
