To be fair, I've hurt myself doing a lot less athletic things with no contact to anything than I'd like to admit

Tough to say.

Let’s look at multiple angles.

The only thing I see is possibly hit his head on the floor (which is out of the gif).

Since we never saw him again or have any update, I'm going to believe #15 was wearing a steel plate under his jersey.

If we had the one true missing link of a great shooting guard on this team ( say Adam Miller ) we would have beat Ky by 15 last night. See how that works.

He could’ve definitely ended up with a concussion from the neck movement.

This is correct. Concussions don’t always come from direct contact to the head. They occur from quick change of direction or sudden stop. It’s called contrecoup when the brain ricochets off the opposite side of the skull. A hit to the body can cause this type of concussion due to inertia.

Wheeler wasn’t moving particularly fast at the moment of impact, but it was still a sudden hard stop.

He looked rough being helped off the court. Hope he gets healthy and gets back on the court.

Classic Cal... went onto the court just to bitch to the ref and didn't even check on his player

Yeah, if there’s one thing Cal is known for it’s not caring about his players.

It's sounding like he won't be available for Georgia this weekend now.

He really must've gotten the shite knocked out of him with that blindside. Can't be too careful with head/neck stuff.

Those seem to happen a lot more when a guy has absolutely no idea the collision is coming. I assume it has to do with you being able to even subconsciously brace yourself a little bit when you have even a tiny bit of notice vs total loose body/muscles when you have no clue.

I'm skeptical about this being a serious injury but here's a possible explanation after watching the slo-mo a few times. Damage could be as if he was punched in the neck. You can drop somebody immediately if you know where to strike. See the shoulder look like it gets compressed to the side of the neck? That could be the culprit here.
