Cal Ripken Jr's boy committed to play at Carolina once upon a time and wasn't good enough to make the team. His pop's couldn't swing the bat for him either.

Will Andruw Jones himself be putting on his son's Vandy jersey when his son isn't good enough for the SEC?

1. This kid’s swing looks horrible in this video. Like can’t start on his rec ball team horrible.

I think that was a hit-and-run swing during a BP round or something. Here is a video from last year when he was a freshman in HS. Fairly raw but you can see the potential considering his age.

He’s just not even close to the poster child of the steroid era.

So who is The poster child? Is it Bonds, Sosa, McGwire, Palmeiro, Conseco, Clemens, or is it a guy who is in the Hall and obviously used?

"Poster Child" for the steroid era has many many many faces on it.

Andrew Jones will never be a HOFer despite what the article says

He should be...10 gold gloves and almost 500 career homers from a center fielder

Yeah I don’t know which Andruw they remember

The argument for Jones is that his peak was good enough for serious HOF consideration. But yeah, he compiled way too many bad stats for several years at the end to ever make it in I'm afraid. But this is what his HOF supporters cite to back him:

quote:

Before his production rapidly declined upon turning 30, Jones produced MLB's third-best WAR from 1998-2007. The two players who ranked ahead of him within this span were Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez. The man ranked immediately behind him was his longtime Braves teammate Chipper Jones, who gained a first-ballot Hall of Fame induction last year. Hall of Famers Roberto Clemente, Al Kaline, Ken Griffey Jr. and Mays stand with Ichiro Suzuki as the only other outfielders to win as many Gold Glove Awards as Jones.

also had around a .250 career BA. I also wouldn't call 434 homeruns "almost 500." He would have needed 5 more seasons to reach 500 at the rate he was hitting homeruns at the tail end of his career. Fred McGriff has a much better case for the HOF.

Lol. AJ was the best CF of his generation AND he hit 434 HR. Who cares how his career ended? Lots of Hall of Famers sucked as they got old.

Yeah he did all of that, but other than that, he didn’t get on base very much. Too many holes in his game.

And other than the one Yankee game, didn’t really have much postseason success either.

Definitlely not the poster boy. The first names that come to mind are:

Caminiti, Canseco, McGwire, Sosa

But I'm sure Andruw was involved at some point. Most of that Braves team started to look suspicious around 02-04.

Do what? You have any idea how many runs he saved?Ask Glavine,Smoltz or Maddux who deserved the HOF more.

They didn’t fall off a cliff at age 30 like Jones did

Doubt uou watched much baseball if you're telling a 10 time gold glove CF is less valuable than a 1B.

Compare WAR stats for each...not even close in their primes.

He’s arguably the best defensive center fielder of all time.

Well lucky for you, this is a metric that is and has been tracked. Andruw Jones has the most defensive runs saved by a center fielder (and outfielder) ever, and by a large margin. That number puts him 4th all time regardless of position.

1. Andruw Jones 236 DRS
2. Willie Mays 183
3. Jim Piersall 175
4. Paul Blair 174
5. Devon White 135

Not to mention he has the highest dWAR of all time, also by a fairly significant margin

1. Andruw Jones 24.2 dWAR
2. Paul Blair 18.5
3. Willie Mays 17.9
4. Devon White 16.1
5. Jim Piersall 15.2

That wasn't all muscle mass by any stretch. I would say about half of it was Quarter Pounder with Cheese mass. And he wasn't tiny when he got to the league. He showed up to training camp overweight most every year. He was always smaller by the end of the season. That didn't happen with roid guys. I think you are way off on this.
