The position has been snake-bitten. McPherson went 6-7 as a freshman and 13-13 as a sophomore then got sick before the season started last year. Township McGough was the 4 highest kicker as a recruit but was 5-12 last year.
Coming into the season it looked like McPherson was good to go. Then he got sick again right before the season started. And McGough hurt himself on his first FG attempt of the year by kicking the ground and not the ball.

Harsin ignored recruiting all together and left Auburn trying to play in the SEC with Sun Belt Conference level talent.
Then Hugh came in with a gargantuan task of rebuilding the Auburn roster and put them back in a position where they could compete at the highest levels of the conference.
While a valid argument in the past, I don't think this applies to college football anymore.
Look at Vanderbilt, or UCLA, or even UAB.
It doesn't take four or five years to rebuild a roster.
It's coaching.

Cohesion. Just seems like that little something on winning teams is missing. I agree, Auburn should be much better than they are right now.

Nothing except the QB. That's it. AU has dudes at WR, pretty good dudes at RB, a solid veteran O-line. (AU is last in sacks given up, but that's a bit misleading because Arnold holds onto the damn ball forever).
So it's a combination of bad QB play and Freeze not knowing how to coach it out of Arnold (which may not be possible to be fair).
Auburn fans claimed the bolded going into the season when OU fans were claiming the Arnold just wasn't very good.
Now of course this was AFTER OU fans were giddy that Dillon Gabriel moved on to hand Jackson Arnold the QB job.
Jackson Arnold has made complete idiots of two fan bases now. Maybe he can transfer after this season and we can have a third one.

I also sense that we don't really have any leadership on offense. Nobody who will go down the bench and get on guys' asses when they aren't doing their job. Everybody just sits around waiting on someone else to step up.
Sure doesn't make it look any better on that front when one of your team captains (and supposed leaders) up and quits mid-season because he got his panties bunched up over playing time.

Alex McPherson was one of the best kickers in the nation before he got sick last season. But that’s the thing, it was last season when he got sick. The reasonable thing a coach should do is bring in another kicker in the offseason in case he doesn’t fully recover, which he hasn’t, as a backup. It boggles my mind that Freeze just put his faith in McPherson having a full recovery and regaining his strength. Chalk that upas another failure on the part of Hugh Freeze.

QB and a winning culture.
Losers produce more losers. And Hugh Freeze is a loser.

He brought in the kicker from Southern Miss (10/13) last year. Long of 59.
McGough was 19/22 his senior year of HS with a long of 60.
Just a snake-bitten position.

Not trolling, your offense is terrible. Most teams in the SEC have a ton of talent on paper. What matters is the performance in the field, and your offense has severely underperformed. There is no confidence when the game is on the line. You couldn’t gain a yard in 2 OTs against Missouri. Do you have enough talent to keep most games close? Yes, but so do most teams in the SEC. Hell, Arkansas is keeping games close. Until you have an offfensive identity centered around a playmaking QB or a dependable rushing attack, you will continue to lose a lot of games.

Robby Ashford has now played at four schools, and T. J. Finley in on his fifth.
Both of those guys started at Auburn after they let Bo Nix become "miserable" and leave.

Trolling aside, I think we must at least consider the possibility that God probably hates Auburn. I mean, who doesn't? And I can't imagine them having this degenerate charlatan Freeze has helped that situation.

I’ve been miserable watching Auburn football since.

If Auburn did not have this defense they would be at best a 2 win team. Thats what’s missing. They sinhlegandedly keep Auburn in ball games.

Mental Toughness. Any bit of adversity derails them. They aren't a championship team talent wise but they are better than their record if their coach instills any level of mental fortitude in them. But their coach would rather cry than keep it together. Bama didn't fold after FSU. Georgia hasn't folded in any of the seemingly 700 quarters they have spent trailing this year. Vandy, heck even Florida was playing for Billy up until he got canned. Auburn has a coaching problem. Hugh Freeze is letting those kids down.

How was kicker sick? Its werid Auburn not having a good kicker.
Posted on 10/20/25 at 4:40 pm to Syd
IIRC, their kicker (Alex McPherson) actually is a tough SOB. Hugh could learn from him. Dude had his colon removed and kicks with a colostomy bag. I don't see many coming back to play after all that. Hats off to him.
