Is this whole has a lotta "sidewalk" fans really true? I think it's something made up by LSU fans

Totally true, because people like to pull for winners. We’re the premier brand in the most passionate region in the country for college football.
I welcome the sidewalks, because it means we’ve got a program worth tying your self-worth to. Pretty much the exact opposite of Auburn.

Having lived in Alabama for a while I can it is unequivocally true. Auburn fans typically went to the school, everyone else cheers for Alabama. Bama owns the trailer parks.

I'm almost 50 and have lived in Tuscaloosa all of my life. I'm a proud "sidewalk" fan.

100% made up like their program being a blue blood. We pull for winners. We put the house on OM. That’s what winners do.

I was born into being an Alabama fan.
Some of my earliest memories in life revolve around Alabama football. Family sitting around watching or listening to the game, cheering and so forth.
Different times and good times.

The vast majority of college sports are supported by Sidewalk fans (estimates as high as 2/3). A few factors like a pro-sports vacuum, national TV and brand exposure, family traditions, cultural/regional ties, and, as pointed out with "winning" programs, the bandwagon effect impact the #s.
Bama covers all of those. So, it isn't a big surprise they have a lot of sidewalk fans.
That said, some bandwagon fans are sidewalk fans but not all sidewalk fans are bandwagon fans. The sidewalk fan may have generations of families pulling for a school in all major sports as strongly or stronger than any graduate of the school.
It isn't really a bad thing. The argument has always been silly to me, as it attempts to make some sort of elitist point that falls flat.
You don't have to live in Atlanta or play for the team to follow the Braves anymore than one has to have attended a class or graduated from OSU, LSU, UGA, Bama, AU, etc to be a "true" fan of a college sport.
But, that is just my 2 cents, which don't even count for 2 cents.

It's true, all their fans are graduates. That is what makes this:

Your boosters spend tens of thousands of dollars to support their University and their last bowl appearance started 3rd grade this year.
