Alabama vs Georgia 2017 is looking awfully similar to Alabama Florida 2008

A traditional SEC Power in it's 2nd year with their new head coach comes in as the #1 team against the team that had been dominating the league during that time.

You could see it ending up exactly like last time: Saban wins this year but next year in the rematch Smart runs Saban out of the SEC like Saban did to Urban.

It's happening: a look at our new SEC Overlord:

Y'all should wear black jerseys to commemorate the occasion.

You know I was thinking the exact same thing awhile back. Alabama established dominance much like Florida did the years before. Average Georgia team now what appears to be a powerhouse for the first time in ages and not a pretender per usual.

When has a cheap copy been better than the original? There is only one Saban, just as there was only one Bear. Real champions create their own path and not try to be poor imitations of their mentors.

I think Georgia fans are getting their hopes up too high. As a Braves and Falcons fan I have come to accept that the state of Georgia is not meant to go all the way. The 1995 WS being the once in a lifetime exception. But for the most part Georgia teams find creative ways to choke.

If Smart wants to be a champion he has to do it his own way and he has to go back to Alabama because there is no way he wins championships in Georgia. I would hate for Georgia's chokeful nature to break his spirit and hurt his reputation.

UGA definitely looks like the best East team since 2009. Looks like.

You are assuming Smart is copying Sabin's blueprint. Why don't you give Kirby some credit for interjecting some of his own philosophy into this UGA team? I could argue that Smart is succeeding with less talent than Saban. Bama is loaded with 5 star talent which to Saban's credit has been built over the years.

We may lose to Bama if we are fortunate enough to make it to the SEC Championship game or we may win. It's just that simple. Also simple... I support my Dawgs.... GO DAWGS !!!!

holy frick can alabama play uga already?

All the "georgia looks like" and "alabama vs. georgia prediction" and "can UGA beat bama" and all the similar shite are getting very repetitive.

Thanks a lot rest of the SEC for sucking so hard there is one game to talk about and look forward to this year. Makes for a real interesting football season - get your shite together please.

People also assume that Kirby was just an errand boy for Saban. Smart has been with Saban since his time at LSU, Kirby has learned from Saban but also has his unique style.

You're totally right. A lot of people like to forget that Saban invented playing good defense and ball control/game management offense. In another stroke of genius, he was also the first to recognize that getting the best high school talent available enables you to assemble some of the best college teams

Let's go with the OP's assumption that UGa wins out and is 12-0 and #1 going into the SECCG. That means Smart will have been HC for exactly 25 games, with one division title to his credit.

Going into the 2008 SECCG, Saban had already coached in 159 games in his HC career. He had just won his third division title, and was playing for his third SEC Championship (fourth overall, as he won the MAC title at Toledo). It would have put him in position to play for his 2nd BCS Championship.

But other than that, yeah, the similarities are eerie.

If Georgia and Alabama meet in the SECCG it ought to be a good one. Alabama would be favored but I believe Georgia would show up to play, end of pregame story.

Kirby knows that you have to have top talent and it appears he is recruiting very well. The state of Georgia produces more top talent than the state of Alabama, I don't think that is debatable. Kirby just needs to get 25 of them every year.

What if it's more like LSU vs. UT in 2001, but without the losses? UGA is perfectly capable of beating bama. I'm not sure bama could have beaten UF in 2008, except under very lucky/unusual circumstances.

Wasn't that the year they lost to Yaw-yaw's Ole Miss team? The game that sparked Tebaw's impassioned post-game diatribe?

Apparently you haven't been keeping up with recruiting rankings the past few years.
