As last year wore on, some of us noticed that he seemed to be looking to make the big play and his basic coverage skills were suffering.

Oh, sure, now the rational ones will speak up and the tards will clam up and hide. Where were you in my 40,0000 arguments about this with your stupid friends?

I only talk down to idiotic sentiments, not people. It doesn't make us "significantly" worse. We were going to be worse in the secondary anyway this year. I don't think we are much worse than we were already going to be

His coverage skills really weren't as bad as people made them out to be. He was usually in good position. It is tough to overcome being 5'8" if you aren't a freak athlete though.

ETA: A 5'8" DB that is.

Where it hurts LSU is that there are now going to be 2 guys playing a ton in the secondary with little to no experience at all...see bama 2010, as talented as a secondary that saban has had they were green and got caught out of position too many times.

There's no doubt in my mind that the 3 and 4 corners, who are now the 2 and 3 corners, have every bit the talent at covering a wide receiver that mathieu had, but they haven't played 2 full seasons and will likely make mental mistakes moreso than a guy with some snaps under his belt would

It won't hurt the team much if any in my opinion. You lose experience and some of the pass rushing and special teams ability he brought but you gain a much better coverage corner and won't have that babbling idiot being a distraction all season.

Where it will really hurt is depth if another corner or safety goes down.

Sounds like you wouldn't know what you are looking at based on your characterization of his play.

Based on him not being a starter yet playing quite a bit, having suspect corner coverage skills, height issues, etc.... all mixed with his ability to go in and apply pressure to QB's, and create havoc in very specific situations.

I thought in a few of the games in the latter part of the season, he was more easily contained. This culminated against Alabama. So I wanted to see if other teams had a solution.

That is your opinion. There is nothing idiotic about suggesting losing your starter at a position makes that group significantly worse. You were way too aggressive on that take. You disagree, which is fine. Your second sentence is actually a cogent argument. Your first take was out of line in my opinion. Doesn't mean anything online, I realize, but I think my opinion is a reasonable one.

we didn't lose just one guy. we lost 2 starters (taylor and claiborne) and our top back up (brooks). Not to mention depth guys like Vinson and Jenkins.

Hard to find rational people around here.

A guy his size will always get beat against well thrown balls. A CB of any size will get beat against well thrown balls.

You'd think he was a 5'9" Neiko Thorpe who just wildly punched at the ball and luckily picked up a few forced fumbles with the way he is talked about by many on here.

I don't know if the secondary will be worse.

I don't think they will be worse statistically but that's more because of a few other improved factors (SOS, DLine, LBs)

ETA: and a QB

I was one of the Bama fans who always respected how he played. I had no personal problem with him like some others, and I always feel when a player throws it away like this. Just nothing to be gleeful about there.

With that being said, to answer the OP, from Bama's standpoint this absolutely feels like addition by subtraction for LSU. As others have pointed out he was a non-factor in the first game, and a liability in the second. I think he was figured out by our staff. It didn't matter what lock down corners LSU had/has behind him, TM7 would have been starting, and I guarantee if he was still on the team and 11/3 was tomorrow, Bama's offensive gameplan would rely heavily on picking on him. Now there might be a lockdown guy like Reid, Mo, Peterson, etc in his place.

The only funny thing in all of this is LSU fans who are now conceding/ considering that at least some elements of LSU’s defense could be better with him gone. Not a single one of you would have said that last night. All fanbases do this but this is an especially dramatic turnaround.

I personally think losing TM7 is a tremendous loss.

However, LSU can overcome.

Could ask our upcoming star Freshman WR....

Tiger fans bending over backwards to pat Les on the back when this was probably automatic.

You guys started off last season with controversy too. At what point do you stop stroking him and start asking why the program is starting to smell more like UGA and FSU of old?

Leadership problem?

Why wouldn't Miles just come out and say this, especially if its only a matter of time before the NCAA does.

It is funny when other big name programs point fingers about behavior issues.

Didn't a Bama player get arrested for selling coke after a practice in the facility parking lot?
