As we reported earlier, when athletes pursue the same major, something known as clustering, it raises questions whether they are taking the classes they need for an education, or being steered to easy (or in the case of UNC-Chapel Hill, fake) classes that help keep them eligible.

quote:

Auburn had 35 different types of majors listed on its roster, making the Tigers second behind Virginia Tech for the most among the power programs.

This is a big part of what you wanted to say, so you should have led with it. You wanted the message to be "we aren't possibly skewing in favor of our players, we're doing it the right way b/c we are Auburn men".

quote:

Thursday, he sent a list of majors for the team. It shows the top four are Business, Exercise and Sport Science, Communications Studies and Criminal Justice, with 19, 17, 10 and 9 athletes respectively.

Great. Now look at the general student population at Alabama. Business, Communication Studies, and Criminal Justice are going to be among the top 5-7 majors on campus in general (Business & Comm Studies are both in top 5). And are you surprised that athletes want to major in Exercise & Sport Science? It's what they do and likely what some would like to do professionally when their playing days are over.

This is your M.O. Shite comes out against AU. No one really cares or thinks it's a big deal, but people mess with AU fans over it b/c they know someone like you will get riled up. Then you predictably come to the rescue of your team. When tRant smells blood in the water they swarm around you and mock your team harder. You deflect by finding whatever you can on Bama. It's a tired, predictable process with you. Have fun though.

We all know this is a response thread, but you've found some real gems.

Ole Miss: General studies

Straight from the Ole Miss website

The Bachelor of General Studies is a cross-disciplinary degree program offered to maximize opportunities for individuals to reach personal goals, meet job requirements, and advance their careers.

The degree was created in 2011 to meet the needs of undergraduates who wish to tailor their own degree program to meet their specific educational and career needs; non-traditional students whose work and family responsibilities constrain their ability to complete the requirements of other undergraduate degree programs offered by the University; and students who have accumulated many college credits, but discontinued their studies without completing a degree.

Well SOMEBODY has to be shift manager at McDonalds.

Florida: African-American studies
If you click on the "Careers for Graduates with Degrees in African American Studies" link on the University website, you're redirected to Yahoo's search page. Nothing else really needs to be said.

Kentucky: Undergraduate studies
Though you guys were in there too, but it looks like this is where they put students that haven't declared a major, which they must do before they exceed 60 hours. In other words, this is where Cal parks his one and dones.

Mississippi State: Human science
Ok, so it is legit but you really went and lumped your Childhood Development & Counseling program in the same school as your Agricultural Science? Really?

I wouldn't call that caving. That's the Hillary Clinton approach...give as little and be as murky as possible.

Or scared to death of violating FERPA rules. I have had to work with it and universities are terrified of violating it so the default course of action is to release as little as possible. Majors are allowed to be released if they are listed as "directory" type information. I do think universities have the discretion to decide if they want to release student majors. The law is designed to favor keeping as much info private as possible

Not sure why everyone is surprised by this. Sure it's the same as a general studies degree.

Doesn't mean they aren't learning something while playing a sport.

Hell, a large percentage of players would never have the opportunity to darken a college classroom if they weren't a physically skilled athlete.

Why are people so concerned about degrees? I went to medical school with a guy who has a kinesiology degree. And one really good friend has a general studies bachelor's. Completed his residency at md anderson and is practicing rad oncology now.
