Just read in KPRC (Houston) that 400 of you baws put a bonfire together (off-site apparently) to commemorate the fallen in the bonfire 20 years ago.

Will this bonfire be an annual thing now or was it just for the 20 year commemoration?

Good luck tomorrow

It will never be an official university event again.

They have been doing it off campus since the collapse. Still student run, just much smaller stack. Thanks for asking.

There is a group that tries to keep it going and it has occurred for sometime now. The University, listening to its legal advisors and insurers, go to great lengths to keep it completely separate from the school.

It is located just north of Bryan city limits. It is a few yards north of the Brazos-Robertson county line in Benchley, TX.

It capped at 109 feet in 1969 and was reduced to 55' afterwards.

I support the students in their ongoing endeavor.
As has been said, this same version has been cut, loaded, stacked, and burnt since the collapse.

When someone mentioned “smaller,” they were referring to involvement and attendance, not the size of stack.

When I was an undergrad, Bonfire was everything.
The entire fall revolved around it.
We scheduled our classes, based on what it took to get it done.

It’ll never be the same.
The legacy is too painful; too hard.

Still an incredible way to build A&M camaraderie and in a small way honor those you lost that tragic day. RIP.

They soak it with jet fuel for 2 hours prior to burning. Superstition is that if it stays up past midnight the Aggies win.

Fire is dangerous and one of my most feared things. The closest I came to perishing is when a “controlled burn” being conducted by an adjacent landowner went awry and advanced onto our timberland. I was running down a firetrail with fire in the trees on both sides of the trail. Fortunately I was able to get to a field where they had a fire truck and escaped.

Good to know, tbh I wouldn’t mind seeing that in person. Should I not wear my LSU shirt tho?

You can always wear whatever you want in CSTX.
We don’t get worked up about that kinda stuff.

It should be noted that the construction is different than what we used to do. All logs in the current bonfires touch the ground. In the past the separate layers were on top of one another wired to to a central pole. There are also now logs that are partially put in the ground like fence posts now iirc. They do as much as they can to make something like this as safe as possible.
