Aggies: Thoughts? Mike Elko insists it’s ‘impossible’ to recruit QB depth in portal

A reporter asked Elmo about how hard it is to recruit quarterback depth in the transfer portal.
“It’s impossible. I don’t think anybody anywhere is recruiting depth out of the portal. I don’t think people in the portal go where there is an established starter.”
Sooooo? Reed is the man next season too?
I’m thinking a pretty long list could be made of QBs signed out of the portal.

I think Alabama has decent depth at the QB position.

That's not accurate.
Speaking for LSU, they got the top player in the portal to play QB, a top 30 overall player and former 5 star in Longstreet as young depth, and a guy in Clark who multiple P4 teams wanted to start.
Texas has Arch and the top Freshman QB from last year's class.
Oregon has Moore and now Raola. Before that, Moore sat behind Gabriel.
Ohio St has a high level top 2 QBs as well

Elko is too busy eating himself to death to put together a decent roster. Brian Kelly’s cornball arse had MVB leave a starting job at Moo St to sit behind the Nuss Bus. There are plenty of examples proving Elko wrong. Plus Marcel Reed is dogshit. TAMU is USCe just with an ego bigger than Elko’s gut. They’ll never be good.

Wow. That is shockingly lazy thinking and not a response I expected from him. I would agree it's not easy to get a quality QB out of the portal but they are out there for the taking.

I think in general, you can have:
- Established starting QB
- Experienced Veteran backup
- Young, talented freshman/sophomore
Not a perfect setup, but passable

He is telling some truth there as most decent QBs are going to want to start so they will go to a lower ACC or Big 12 team where they think the competition is less before they will portal to sit behind a starter at an SEC team.

Yeah, there are plenty of examples of quality QBs in the portal.
I already want Silverfield to drive his bike in a ditch, but if he actually said this out loud? Impossible? That’s not a leader. It’s like Yurachek telling us we’ll never have the money to compete in the SEC. How can you lead the program after that? You MUST go.

He screwed the pooch when he put all his marbles in the basket of a guy who always been a 55% passer and has feasted on bad teams. He had a blank check book to go after two coordinators and a proven QB and he whiffed on all three. Some of us were begging for them to after a top tier qb in the portal, without one you aren't winning anything of importance at the end of the year.

Coach Elko only has to look at Trinidad Chambliss. He transferred to Ole Miss with the heralded Austin Simmons already there. He actually wasn't the starter last season at the beginning until Simmons got injured and we all know the rest of the story.
Did anyone really know how good Chambliss was coming from Ferris State? I suppose the professional scouts and coaches are supposed to. Like Elko.
