Yeah
With the exception of Vanderbilt all of the SEC schools are beholden to their state governments and courts.
And certainly federal and state legislatures and courts have meddled many times before. Chambliss seems like a recent obvious and somewhat egregious example. He's there in spite of SEC and NCAA rulings.

The First Amendment claim the SEC is making in that filing is the right to free association.
Pretending to be a good-old boy club that has a right to decide who gets to be a member is all well and good - until that club starts acting like a business, signing huge contracts on behalf of the club with external parties that bind both the club AND it's specific members to contractual obligations, and also committing to member obligations for compensation from those outside arrangements.
The SEC isn't a big private club - it's a business, one that has made legally binding obligations both outside of and within its membership. And that, unfortunately for the SEC, is exactly what they've been working towards for the last 20 years - maximum revenue. Well, now they have it, and it's the rope that will be used to hang them if they go after LSU because Sankey is butthurt with no actual transgression by LSU.
Sankey can't have his cake and eat it too. He doesn't get to pretend to be a private club and also act like a business enterprise engaging in commerce with contractual obligations.
Kick LSU out at your own risk, Sankey. The countersuits by both the students in question, the school, the state, and other injured parties will bankrupt the SEC. Not to mention what the Mouse might have to say about breaking the contractual obligations for the product they paid billions for.

This is what, the third or fourth time you've changed your position on what this whole thing is about? At first, it was: LSU just needs to follow the rules like everyone else. Then it turns out LSU was following the rules, so it became "but LSU coerced these athletes to file suit. They should be punished for this coercion." Then it turned out the SEC has no evidence of such coercion and have not even alleged it in the suit. So yesterday you pivoted to "this is about Louisiana politics being injected into the LSU athletic program." Now it over the private equity deal. I don't know that I've seen anyone move the goal posts as much as you have during this entire ordeal. At least Sankey and the SEC have remained somewhat consistent in their position, as tenuous as it may be.
