UK is the only team to have won multiple NITs and NCAA tournaments.

The 1946 NIT championships was equal to if not more prestigious than the NCAA.

Coaches boycotted the NIT after the mobsters got to UK, Bradley and others.

CCNY won both the NIT and NCAA in 1950. How many mob dollars did that take?

Who said it was the dollars, the NYC Mafia (Italian only) was not the CHI Mob (other people allowed). The old guys had other ways to put the fix in

Interesting how similar Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, and LSU are.

Notre dame made the first Sweet Sixteen in 1953. Arkansas first one was in 1958 and wouldn't appear in one until 1978. During this drought, Notre Dame would appear in multiple Sweet Sixteens in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Kentucky is as old guard as you can get. Arkansas is Johnny come lately, a newcomer in comparison.

You forgotten the 1941 and 45 Arkie team? Y’all. Made the elite 8.

Cal isn't even close to being the winningest coach.

If not for being in the same conference with Kentucky, these four teams would all be a little higher to the right.

Kentucky is the best basketball program in history. The fact LSU, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida have won as much as they have is impressive.

Sounds dumb. How many times did Kentucky knock y’all out of the tournament before the sweet 16?

What amazes me that ND has more Sweet 16 trips than Arkie. Wow.

I never would have guessed Kansas State had that many Sweet 16s and NCAAT appearances. They're basically nipping at the heels of the lesser blue bloods.

I guess big brother steals the spotlight in that state.

The NCAA tournament was a 16 team tournament from the late 40s until 1975.

For 25 years, any time Kentucky kept another team out of the NCAA tournament they bumped them out of the sweet 16.

You are the third Arkansas fans in multiple threads today that have no idea the NCAA tourney was a 16 team tourney until 1975. Basketball really did start with Nolan Richardson for you guys.

No doubt those were prestigious years for the tourney.

quote:

What year did the NCAA have the first men's basketball tournament?

1939

The first tournament was held in 1939 and was won by Oregon. It was the idea of Ohio State coach Harold Olsen. The National Association of Basketball Coaches operated the first tournament for the NCAA. From 1939 to 1950, the NCAA tournament consisted of eight teams, with each selected from a geographical district.

Lul wut? Cal did alright to start but overall he was just a lil over mid. It goes Rupp with 4 titles, then Rick, then cal, then Joe b, then tubby. All won titles, but none had a losing season like cal did.

Kentucky
North Carolina
Duke
UCLA
Kansas

Those are the basketball blue bloods.

UCONN is the Miami of college basketball...dominant period, but not blue blood territory at this point.

Quite an assumption based on my question Relatively common knowledge that the field of 64 is a modern thing
