Given the playoff of the dozen top ranked teams have never occurred that systematically route you to play the top 10 teams… it’s not as unprecedented as you think. Impressive nonetheless.

People still throw that number around like its supposed to be an absurd amount. Texas, Texas tech, Oregon, michigan, and Miami are all probably paying double that this year. Texas is paying like half that just for Arch. 20 million is probably the bare minimum it takes just to field a borderline top 10 team.

I forgot about those back to back bowl games against the lesser USC. 3 National Titles and 15 major bowls wins since those losses tend to do that.

I was at both of them.
First one got John Cooper fired ... Ohio HS player of the year was a Gamecock and the Outback Bowl MVP.
Next year was cheatin' arse Tressel's first year and we took the suckeyes to the woodshed again.
Mike McGee begged Andy Geiger to schedule a home and home series with us like Michigan had done .... but Geiger and Tressel spouted they had nothing to gain and everything to lose ... what pussies.
I wrote an article about it at the time. OSU went undefeated the next season and won a MNC, they beat an overrated Miami of the ACC if I remembercorrectly ... but they were afraid to schedule a home and home with The UofSC.
