If there is a national champ this year, will people recognize it...or not due to a shortened season?

Don't worry about it. It isn't happening
Posted on 8/5/20 at 8:26 pm to southernboisb
Depends on who wins it.

Georgia fans would say this in a year that they know they won't win it all.
Go recruit some more 5 stars and see more talent get wasted.
Have fun going another year without a natty.

Aren't all teams dealing with the same virus and same obstacles? Whoever wins it is just as deserving as any other champion of the past. Obviously this is if we get through the entire season as scheduled.

It obviously will not officially have an asterick, but no matter how you slice it this will always be looked at as a “weird” season if it plays out with limited fans, limited schedules, and some players sitting out and potentially some more cancelled games.
While a national champion may very well be crowned, that champion won’t be looked back on with the same clout/prestige as previous champions IMO.

Depends on how the year plays out. Same with every other league.

Regardless all teams from now on won’t ever compare to The GOAT that finished their masterpiece on Jan .13.
Deal with it.
Deal with it.

Fair point, but nonetheless if stadiums aren’t full, some players sit out, and generally-speaking society’s focus elsewhere (coronavirus, BLM, election), this season is gonna go down as a weird one and will probably forever be remembered that way if it makes it to the end.
It just is what it is unfortunately this year given the circumstances.

I never said it wasn't going to be a weird season, but it will be weird for everyone.

I would argue the year with an asterisk is the year we would win it all

They might get wasted but at least the 5 stars are being utilized to continue beating y’all’s arse for the foreseeable future. Urban Meyer and Steve Spurriur ain’t walking through that door, bud.

Alabama will claim it regardless

As long as conferences can crown champions and you get to a playoff it will hold weight
No one cares you are not playing non conf games or at least three of them in the sec footprint
Also depends on if marquee players opt out or miss games

I agree. If we actually get to January and are still playing football (they won’t be), I think they playoff will be viewed as very legit. Frankly it’s what a lot of people have been clamoring for. Ten conference games plus a conference title game will produce the most tested conference champions, and with virtually no non-conference games across college football, the playoff will almost certainly consist of four conference champions. It’ll be a very deserving national champion if one is crowned.

This is a terrible take. Of course this year’s national champion will be legitimate as long as we have a CFP. Why wouldn’t it be?

Should we expand the playoffs to 8 teams since we do not have many cross-conference games?

I keep seeing that idea, but I don’t know why this year is the year to expand. I think the exact opposite. You have teams playing more conference games, so you should get very legitimate conference champions. Take the top 4 from the power 5 and play your playoff. A lot of people have been fighting for “conference champions only” but now in a year where you will get a schedule almost entirely of conference games, the same people want more conference runners up in the playoff?
