The average person entering Auburn has a higher GPA/ACT than the average person entering Alabama.
Auburn admits a higher percentage of its applicants than Alabama does.
So long as the respective universities are admitting the top applicants in their class, and both universities have around the same percentage of admitted applicants attend (this might not be true - I don't know), we know that the average applicant to Auburn is smarter than (or at least has better numbers than) the average applicant to Alabama.

It's a lot easier to get into Uga If you live in Monroe county than it is if you live in Fulton county.

Auburn and Bama are both excellent universities, period.
As to the acceptance rate, schools that get a ton more apps (as the "state" schools always do) are always gonna have a lower acceptance rate. They can't possibly accept anywhere near 79% because they don't have the facilities to do it.
Also, even though AU's acceptance rate is "79%", enrollment isn't growing. Its remaining steady. Ergo, lots and lots more people apply to the "state" schools (i.e. Bama) than Auburn.
QED.
(Oh, and the "high" 79% acceptance rate doesn't seem to be affecting the average GPA and ACT/SAT scores of Auburn's entering freshmen, which continue to get HIGHER.)

I think I heard that this past freshman class was the largest, or one of, that Auburn has ever had.

Probably the best explanation I've seen. Engineering and other technical fields have always been Auburn's strength academically and those students tend to have slightly higher ACT scores than the average applicant.
I think Auburn's close proximity to metro Atlanta is a HUGE plus and they've done an excellent job of recruiting in that area and Georgia in general even to the point of being the 2nd most popular choice in the area after UGA. The HOPE scholarship has in a weird way help Auburn more than any other non Georgia school IMHO.

Yeah, we've been holding steady at around 25k for the past couple years. I'm glad we're not going any higher, Auburn's growing too much as it is. Needz moar small college town imo.

Don't take it personal. UA has schools/colleges much better than AU's as well. We both have our individual strengths. The state's Land Grant University has the much stronger engineering program. Believing differently is delusional.

Arkansas is ranked ahead of both Mississippi schools unless I'm missing something.
As for Auburn engineering, I thinks it's clearly ahead of Bama's although Alabama has been gaining some ground the last couple of years. Alabama's hurt some by having some key engineering focus spread out between the Tuscaloosa and Huntsville campus (UAH). Aerospace engineering which for obvious reasons is very strong at UAH spreads the UA system thinner in this area than AU where all the engineering focus is on the main campus. The same thing could be said regarding biomedical engineering at UAB.

There was talk about AU opening a branch campus in Hunstville a few years back. I do not know what happened to those plans.
