Not big on neutral site contests anymore

But I would happily welcome a matchup with Washington at the Rose Bowl. Maybe for the Centenial of that game.

A Bunch of Farmers Upset Football Tradition
They all laughed when Alabama went to the 1926 Rose Bowl, but when the game was over, nobody looked down on southern teams again

when Alabama was picked to play in the 1926 Rose Bowl game against the mighty University of Washington football team, it was considered by many to be the worst mismatch in the history of the game. Alabama had a good enough record—nine straight wins—but football experts in the '20s all knew that southern football was barely on a level with junior varsity play in the rest of the country.

As it turned out, Alabama won—in the most thrilling Rose Bowl game ever played—and no one ever again sneered at southern football.

Here is am excellent historical documentary about the lead-up, play, teams, of the 1926 Rose Bowl. It is about 1 hour long, but includes a very "Ken Burns" type film treatment of the effect of that game on the South... it is very well done and worthwhile for those who love football and history.

I think you'd have to put Tech's 1928 win against Notre Dame in Atlanta up there as well. They went undefeated and won the Rose/MNC that year.

I've noticed people like to discount Georgia Tech's contribution to southern football on this board. They were a MAJOR player back in the day.

I love how any idiot can skew an argument. Take it from somebody that was actually alive and witnessed it and neither of those games were the reason. People started respecting southern football when desegregation happened. I will give Bama and Bryant props for noticing the future of football

And CajunTiger dude... I enjoy LSU a lot, live down here, will die down here, follow local prep closely. But why is it that some LSU fan has to jump up and down and yell "look at me" every time any interesting conversation about football starts?

OP introduced a line about games that put Southern football on the map. I didn't know about the Yale game, and was very interested. I did know that every internet resource mentions Alabama's win in the Rose Bowl in 1926 as being THE game that made Southern football. GT's game with the wrong-way run was also historically interesting.

And what happened in the midst of this? Some tiger fan jumps in with "LSU did it first" LSU did it first" "LSU did it...and is bestest"

Don't you get it that ya'll are becoming a laughing stock? Heck... you all (the fans, not the team) ARE a laughing stock. Take it for what it's worth...

Oh, and I was in the stands in Tuscalooss when Sam-Bam Cunningham and the USC team destroyed Alabama in 1970. The score didn't reflect the game... USC looked like... well ... future-Alabama.

Ahhhhh... the next year, Alabama went to USC for the opening game. The entire town was deadly silent listening on the radio (this was pre ESPN) as Bryant introduced the wishbone with QB Terry Davis (from Louisiana) and RB Johnny Musso. When Alabama won the game the town erupted... never seen anything like it before or since.

For 1915, everything I've been able to find indicates that the major foundations/entities awarded the national championship to:
Cornell
Oklahoma, or
Pitt

I find nothing of LSU being awarded any championship for that year.

That's what is special about the 1917 Ga Tech championship. It was a unanimous/consensus award, a rarity for those times. Tech's 1928 championship team is noteworthy as well.

Can we stipulate that Alabama and Ga Tech were the two teams that put Southern Football on the map in the eyes of the national press? This is not a conference debate since all of this is pre modern conferences.

Foolish people. Don't you all know that LSU invented football, and the internet, and everything, and anyone who denies it is just a deny-er?

...Or they are a ref from somewhere else who hates LSU and cheats them by throwing flags which is proof that they hate LSU? OR they are some media person who hates LSU because they don't tell everyone every time, every year that LSU is the bestest and most big university in the world?

Why LSU is the most important school in the South and is the best at the football ever and all those Rose Bowls and stuff are not nearly as important as LSU.

Besides, the refs cheated them all the time, and any teams that beat them couldn't really because LSU has "all that talent" and no one else could possibly have any talent. Surely no one else has a QB "that can sling it" ... and besides the refs cheat because they call penalties on LSU.

"Jacknola in New Orleans"

fricking greenies. You need to move your arse to Mobile, then you won't have to hear about LSU so much.

Yeah, maybe so, and there are just more local fans on here so I guess there are bound to be more ego-centric ones than for other schools.

I just get a little ... probably sensitive because I have to endure it every weekend with my foursome for at least 18 holes.

It is a good one, especially since I live here and know the players. I like reading Texas and aTm too for the depth of the delusions...

I don't know anything about a claim for 1915 but 1908, 1935 and 1936 are legit titles for LSU
