Twice. Fewer times than Alabama supported the Independence Bowl before Saban arrived.

Do you think in-state schools make more money playing in-state? Logic tells me......yes

Last time i checked every state has this thing called sales and use tax. It is that little percentage on your receipt. You see if citizen of Alabama travels to another city in Alabama, that sales tax and use tax gets , for lack of a better term, "recycled". It is taken from one citizen of that state and allocated to a program in that state for citizens of that state. If citizen from Mississippi comes in and pays that tax, it is new to the state of Alabama. You add to the cash in the state of Alabama.

Why the hell would any state pay for programs promoting out of state tourism? It is because they want new cash in the form of sales and use tax. It is to build up the businesses with not just customers from that state but from others.

Yes there is now more people going out of state for these directional schools playing their pay day games but there is always ways to promote return visitors for the state of Alabama. That is what tourism boards do. More services are required for people going longer distances so the economy grows because the citizens of a state provide those services.

ETA IF bama was doing this, bama fans would be screaming from the mountain top what a great gesture it was.
Do you want a toast? A bow? A thumbs up?

Congratulations to Auburn for continuing on with a great gesture.

Here it is from Troy's perspective. I think we get more mileage from not playing Bama or Auburn. We can say: Bama been ducking us for 100 years.

I don't think there is an upside for Bama and Auburn playing Troy because the truth is they might lose. Sure, Troy has been blown out by SEC opponents, but sometimes we win like at LSU for homecoming in 2017, at night, when LSU was wearing purple.

Troy thrives on being the underdog. That makes taking a scalp that much better.

Troy's P5 wins:
ACC: Florida State
Big12: UCF x6, Cinci, Oklahoma State
Big10: Nebraska
SEC: LSU, Missouri, Mississippi State

Living in Mobile, I've always wished Bama played South Alabama as it would be way more interesting than a rent a win from another state, especially when Joey Jones was the coach there and now Kane Wommack who was there until this year. I was actually able to ask AD Byrne about it and the answer was basically that "we don't have plans to do that", but no answer as to the reasoning behind it. There may be bad blood with UAB but not (I think) with USA since the schools play in baseball and basketball.

wow. So money now knows which state it comes from? I had no idea Mississippi had its own currency.

The games would be played in Tuscaloosa either way. So the same businesses will be getting money regardless of who Alabama is playing. The only thing that is changing is the opponent.

And that money isn't leaving the state regardless of the opponent.

If the opponent is out of state, that would give it more of a chance of any of their out of state fans coming to the stadium, bringing in out of state money.

So the only money that would be leaving the state would be that of the actual contract to come play. And even then that is offset because those teams will just go to other schools and get the same paychecks.

In the end, the money claim is just a poor excuse.

Even cooler that AU supports the Birmingham Bowl, so often.

When has Alabama ever been in the mix for the Birmingham Bowl?

Let me explain it to you like a would a child. If 3 siblings are only paying each other their allowance to do the chores they don't want to do, they will never earn more money than what their parents give them. If the 3 of them start the week off with $30, they will never get more than that for the week.

If the kid next door pays one of the siblings $10 to mow their lawn for them, that household now has..... $40 in total. Introducing an outsider paying money to that house or state now creates more wealth for that house or state.

If you are having a hard time following that, let me know. I can borrow my kids crayons and maybe i can draw you some pictures so you can understand.

It's exactly why. It gives an in-state small school a chance to get in-state exposure and more money.

This season bama plays Mercer. Why not play an in-state school and give them the paycheck and exposure? MERCER.

Tell me you don't understand how taxes on goods work without telling me.

Again..........wow.

ETA Example...........I live in NW Fla.. When I go to a game, I buy my gas, snacks, and drinks in Florida. The day of the game I drive to Auburn. I tailgate. I watch the game. I get in my vehicle and drive home. I may grab a burger in Alabama or I may not spend a penny in Alabama. A citizen of Alabama buys everything in Alabama while going to a game.

Yeah, because what the governments in this country need is more money.

I can't imagine ever cheering for such shite.

I may have unlocked why the State of Alabama doesn’t have a lottery. We like to give our allowance to other states.

It is funny the state legislature had to pass a law to force Alabama and Auburn to play each other starting in the 40’s

Yeah, must be because we're terrified and clearly has nothing to do with exposure and compensation.

UAB was a real threat recently

JFC. They came back and were given a stadium half the size and they still only manage to bring in 10k per game

No one has any issue with Troy or USA, but when a community college with a hospital (and 10,000 crying Auburn fans who still don't go to the games despite promising they would) start knocking on your door begging for a team, it's okay to say no.
