When Mizzou made the SEC move, travel distance was a common point brought up. I kept hearing how far we'd have to travel, but I was curious how much the other schools have to travel in comparison, so I put together this list.

Couple of interesting things were that Florida, a charter member, has the furthest average travel distance besides A&M, who is a whopping 114 miles further away than Florida on average. Also, it looks like before Mizzou and A&M were added that Auburn would've been the #1 on this list. Now it's Bama. Conspiracy?

I'm starting to wonder if Mizzou fans realize that someday, when their body is ready and the time is right, their penis WILL grow.

If you take out the 4 newest members of the conference, the points on the map make a script A.

I don't think travel is an issue for the major sports.

It is, however, an issue for the smaller sports. But nobody gives a shite about them.

dang right it does.

It's not only a conspiracy, it's utter fact that Bama owns this conference. Booyah!

Now break it down by division, and calculate only average distance by division teams. Just curious.

It's pretty obvious that BDS needs to host the SECCG

Illustrates how ridiculous the plan for aTm and USC to play every year. They're nearly 1000 miles away from each other.

Good topic, OP.

For anyone else that is a geography nerd like me: the two median schools moving from West to East are Bama and Vandy

Moving from North to South the two median schools are South Carolina and UGA.

So basically, there are only two schools A&M can travel to within 6 hours.

Showed you what they gave up coming to this conference. That's a pretty big burden to ask from fans.

With 2 new teams, SEC's geographic center moving west but staying in Alabama -- Haleyville, to be exact

quote:

The SEC is moving West, but its geographic center is still in Alabama.

The league confirmed the addition of the Missouri Sunday. Texas A&M, another Big 12 refugee, joined the league earlier.

Both schools will start competition next football season.

Although the scheduling and travel hurdles are still being worked out, it's fair to say that both schools will add a new geographic flavor to what has traditionally been a Deep South football league.

But the changes won't be too dramatic.

Using this very cool website -- Geographic Midpoint Calculator -- we were able to determine just how dramatically the league's center would shift to the west.

As it turns out, not as much as you might think.

Original 12 teams

Using midpoint: just south of Blountsville, Ala.

Using center of minimum distance: I-65 in Alabama near the Smoke Rise exit

Using average latitude/longtide: south of Blountsville

Geo midpoint of SEC West was French Camp, Miss.

Center of minimum distance was Starkville, Miss.

Geo midpoint of SEC East was Cleveland, Ga.

Center of minimum distance was Hayesville, Tenn.

With 2 new teams added

Geo midpoint of new SEC is just south of Haleyville, Ala.

Center of minimum distance is Nauvoo.

Geo midpoint of SEC West is just north of Yazoo City, Miss.

Center of minimum distance is Starkville, Miss.

Geo midpoint of SEC East is just north of Cleveland, Tenn.

Center of minimum distance is Friendsville, Tenn.

The geographic center of the SEC is Tupelo, Mississippi. However, that's biased because of the Texas A&M longitude. So, if you're looking for the true, proportionate center, it's going to be more like Cullman, Alabama

What are you using to calculate these distances??

Google Maps is not agreeing with these distances...
