I just saw an OM highlight on Facebook promoting the upcoming season and it spurred a random thought.

The game where Treadwell fumbled on the 1 yard line and simultaneously broke his leg against Auburn. Would a win there have clinched the SEC West?

And what about 4th and 25 against Arkansas? I’m almost positive, but that game was to clinch the SEC West, right?

Unfortunately, “almost” can be used to describe many, many Ole Miss football seasons.

But we don’t have to worry about that these days. We’re going to be a long way from even “almost” for quite a while.

We would still need to win the Egg Bowl had we won 4th and 25. If we beat Arkansas, we would have lost to State somehow.

Technically we are 1-4 that season so no we would not be 2014 SEC West Champions.

Regardless, we would have had to at least beaten one of LSU and Arkansas in addition to Auburn. We finished 5-3 and 3rd place in the West. Bama was 7-1 so a tie breaker would have gone to us.

Still needed to beat State, but yes :(

Needed to beat LSU and State. Also, 2003 with Eli. Beat LSU and we clinch the West that night. Lose 17-14 instead and our kicker, Jonathan Nichols, missed two field goals that game. I believe he later went on to win the Lou Groza award that year. WAOM

Nichols was perfect on the year entering the game

Nearly. He had missed one against Florida. He also hit two 50+ yarders to beat Vandy and went 4/4 against Arkansas which helped us win 19-7. Nichols was far from the reason we didn't win the west in 2003

I don't think we will have that problem this year.

Anyone else annoyed by the 2003 SEC West Champs banner that hangs in VHS?

Screw everybody else. According to the rules, we are Champs in 2003 along with LSU. The tiebreaker is only to decide who gets to play for the conference championship. Leave it up if only to piss off everyone else.
