We don’t consistently beat the teams we’re supposed to and rarely win the games that matter, yet this is supposed to be a knock on Gundy.

Lane Kiffin and Hugh Freeze have both interviewed in person or via zoom with Auburn AD John Cohen multiple times. Kiffin still has concerns that Ole Miss can reach the levels that Auburn has in the recent past, but he is not lying when he says he is happy at Ole Miss. He just has doubts about its ceiling having been here three years. In his mind, Auburn has no ceiling. I know that will piss off Rebels, but we are just conveying what we know. Lane leads Freeze for the Auburn job, but only by a little bit. Lane leads due to his "rock star" social media presence while Hugh's strengths are fitting in with the community and relationships with alums, etc. I was told they are in a "dead heat" over coaching ability and Hugh may even have the lead in that department due to him having "signature wins" at both Ole Miss and Liberty while Lane doesn't have nearly as many yet. No offer has been made as of last night to either or anyone else.
Conjecture: Lane will get the offer over Hugh and we believe it will be after the Iron Bowl. Will he accept? Not a clue and not a conclusion I am willing to jump to at this point.

Because his struggles still end with winning seasons.

The long awaited WhiskeyDick opinion that none of you asked for.
Lane truly does like it here for his family and himself. He’s got arguably more program control, comfort, etc than any other active coach not named Saban in a town with his parents (and now children) who love him. He’s a rockstar in Oxford with no signs of that changing, even if he stumbles a few years here and there. I think he stays, especially after seeing us step up to his borderline ultimatum on the NIL front that we not only met, but exceeded. With an expanded playoff, he can keep us in the mix year in and year out. I’ll speak the truth even if people hate me for it, I’m not sure any coach in the world can make Ole Miss compete for a championship every year without the expanded playoff. The SEC is a meat grinder and with LSU bouncing back and on the rise, making Atlanta is a tough battle without a lot of balls bouncing your way in the current system, especially for a small school swimming in a sea of monsters.
That said, if he’s offered guaranteed generational wealth (90mm+) then he’s an absolute idiot to not leave. His great grandkids will never have to work a day in their lives. We can talk about how coaches are competitive and want to win all day, but at the end of the day it’s still about money. He’s not an idiot, he knows he’s on the hot seat starting day one due to Auburn’s history of chewing through coaches and spitting them out unless they consistently compete for a Natty. He also knows he won’t have near the control he currently has. He will have a shot with Auburn resources, but if he fails, he effectively won the equivalent of a major Powerball jackpot and can be a guest commentator on ESPN and ride off into the sunset on a jet ski tweeting from the beach. If he wants to coach, he knows he’s starting over and going back to a Florida Atlantic type situation, but with that kind of money, he can hang up the clipboard and not grind again unless he wants to.
I’m not mad if Kiffin leaves, he was the right guy at the right time. He convinced the world Ole Miss could be competitive year in and year out. He turned our small school into a household name, it’s amazing how for two decades most people didn’t know who Ole Miss even was, to random strangers approaching me on the street when I’ve got a Rebel shirt on asking me about the team (I’m now far removed for the Sip in a place where literally everybody had a blank stare after asking me where I went to school) . He taught us how to effectively work the portal, and did the impossible with the NIL progress we’ve had. We needed the social media star power to get that up and running, and I’m not sure any other coach could have made that progress for us like he did. He earned his paycheck and more. I’m not so sure Kiffin actually is a championship caliber coach as there’s a lot left to prove. We might actually be better off now with a different coach, and I’m personally not all-in throwing the bank at him to keep him here. Again, he was the right guy at the right time for us, not necessarily who we need going forward. I think we’ll be fine either way as long as we don’t completely frick up the next hire with a Luke like pick. I don’t think Keith does that, and we have enough money now to not make a desperation hire, so I’m not that concerned.

That’s….that’s quite literally why Gundy was brought up in the first place. It’s a try to elevate our program into a consistently winning program and stop having to find a new coach every 3-4 seasons.
It would be nice to have a player who was honored at senior day by the same head coach who recruited him.

Nuance is lost on a few posters here. They can’t get past black and white.

People are mentioning Gundy but why would he leave a school where he played. OSU can also pony up money if they need to. Unless he really wants to be in the SEC I think this is just a name people throw out.

both of these could potentially be true.
As was stated earlier....it's more than worth throwing the offer out. Make both him and OSU say no.

I rarely post, but I wanted to say I agree with you, Whiskey. Kiffin was the right coach at the right time for Ole Miss.
Is he the right coach moving forward? I don't know. If he stays, great. If he leaves, okay, I guess. I would be fine with him leaving for a Florida, a Miami, etc. But, Auburn? frick that hellhole and frick him if he goes there. I, for one, have not forgotten and will never forget what they did with Tubby and especially with Treadwell. Remember "whatever it takes," anyone?
All I can say is that I am eternally grateful that Keith Carter is our AD. I trust him to make decisions that are in the best interests of Ole Miss.
