I work in Marianna, FL in the Panhandle. We sustained major damage due to Hurricane Michael and won't be back to normal operations for at least a year. As a result, I will be working in Jackson/Ridgeland for 30 day rotations for a long time. I'm staying in the Ridgeland area.
I have never done more than pass through that area many times. Any good recommendations on bars/restaurants and other things to do? I know Madison is pretty close and I have heard it is a nice area, but I don't know anything about it.
INB4 Jackson sucks
Thanks.

I would stay away from downtown Jackson at night, that's for sure.

Downtown Jackson completely shuts down at night time, so this isn't true.

Can't help you with the bar scene but the Trace Grill and the Bulldog Club are two areas I visit when I am in town, which is fairly often. Jackson is just one of those places that I try not to go out in when I visit (safety). Therefore I usually just stay at the Drury Inn and let their appetizers serve as my meal. I do stay at the Hyatt Place occasionally and dine at the restaurants around Colony Park.
Hope things are back to normal in the panhandle soon, I spent a few years down in Bay County.

Ceramis for Italian food. Does eat place for tamales and steaks, also Ticos for steak.
Lakeland drive and flowood is the safest part of outside Jackson that has everything.
Keep your head on a swivel. Good luck.

Not sure what your scene is. There’s a cool bar called the Apothecary in the basement of a drug store. Expensive, hipstery, but good cocktails. That’s the only bar I’ve been to in Jackson, so take it fwiw

Ely's
Shapley's
Sal and Phil's
Georgia Blue
Soulshine
Amerigo
El Potrillo for fajitas
Parker House
I haven't lived there in 12 years so my list may not be as current as others.

Thanks for the recommendations. I’m staying at the Residence Inn in Ridgeland. I’m going for the first trip next Tuesday and coming back the day before Thanksgiving. I will probably going for at least 2 weeks to 30 days at a time for about a year. I’m definitely not looking forward to it but I’m trying to make the best of it.

Don’t let Jackson scare you. If you aren’t a functional retard you will be fine in Jackson. Walker’s Drive-In in Fondren is an awesome place to eat. The Mayflower downtown is also a awesome old restaurant. Brent’s Drugs was a filming location in the movie “The Help” and has a great soup & salad kitchen. Table100 in Flowood is also a great restaurant. Fenian’s Pub on Fortification Street is a neat Irish bar.

I agree. Don't be scared of Jackson. Just use common sense and you'll be fine. There have already been some great suggestions. I'll just add a few.
If nothing else, do yourself a favor and go to the King Edward Grill and get either the ribs, the pork chop, or one of the burgers. Don't worry about the area. It's fine.
Keifers is pretty good if you like Greek food.
The enchiladas and duck wings at The Manship are great.
Some people love Sal & Mookies pizza. I'm not a huge fan, but people seem to like it.
I hear good things about Babalus for tapas.
BBB on High Street is fairly new. The brisket is great. The Farmer's Market nearby has a really good little restaurant, too. It only serves lunch, though.
I think La Cazuela on Fortification Street is the best Mexican restaurant in the area. Pizza Shack is also pretty good.
ETA: I live in Jackson. You'll be perfectly fine at any of these places.

Madison/Ridgeland are the nice suburbs of Jackson and there are a lot of good restaurants around there.
For bars try out Fondren’s Public, great bar just down I-55 from Ridgeland.
Just stick to Madison/Ridgeland/North Jackson and then cross over to Northwest Rankin and you should be good with just about everything there and everything there is pretty safe.
If you’re going to watch a movie, Pearl has the best movie theater I’ve ever gone too and probably is pretty much the main theater for Jackson metro.
Avoid going south of that tho. The Medical Center is probably as far south as you ahouls go.
