Regardless, we should be trimming the population, not adding to it.

Congrats to her for taking a spot in medical school that could have been used for a Man that wouldn't have quit after a few years.

Both parents working has masked our relative decrease in standard of living

And the social safety net hasn't filled in with any sort of practical help for the middle class.

I mean really poor people can get foodstamps, but the average person can't get "free" daycare until their kids are old enough to go to school.

In my area even the cheap daycares are the majority of my wife's salary. If she continued working it would be mostly to cover the daycare when she is at work.

In fact the best case scenario for our standard of living would be to get divorced on paper and THEN have a kid, so she could claim absolute poverty and get benefits like food stamps and medical care via Medicaid. I don't want to do the math, but I would guess the cost of daycare plus all the benefits she could get from divorced poorness would cover the loss of her income to our household.

It shouldn't be that way.

Or another woman who wouldn't quit. Many women have no desire to be stay at home mothers. My wife didn't go to law school to stop working and stay at home with our son and she makes that abundantly clear.

Before, both of us came home tired and stressed and she bitched about the cleaning or cooking or whatever.

So you can afford to be a single income family but couldn't afford a housekeeper and eating out when adding a "professional medical job" as a second income?

Alternatively, maybe you could have helped her clean/cook/whatever instead of drinking beer on the couch

It's kinda funny you think she bitched for valid reasons. She was tired and stressed from work and would find anything to bitch about

I work from home exclusively while my wife who owns a restaurant works a mixture of day and night shifts. Since I'm very knowledgeable of her business, I've been working two of of week night shifts of the weeknights...Gives her two more days off and no loss in income...

Those two days have really made a difference in our home life...We have a daughter that is 10 so it helps for her to be there for her in these puberty years...don't forget the extra sects

It works for us

I am a big free market guy, but I don't believe humans are perfect economic creatures, so we do need some guidelines and laws that can accommodate that. We have to accept certain economic realities that many women need to work, and should be able to do so, but the family unit should be something we as a society nurture and respect, IMO.

I had a mother that worked growing up, but for a lot of years, she controlled her own schedule, and could accommodate me and and my sister with motherly duties.

I think we should give make maternity as financially viable as possible with our tax system. I don't know the best way to do this, but I think it's important.

Sounds like she was in the wrong profession then.

There is nothing wrong with a single earner household, but it definitely isn't for everyone.

Genro,

Motherfricking slow golf clap. Couldn't agree with you more!

Wife transition to a SAHM once we had our first and we've not looked back. I can't tell you one thing I'm wanting for now that I have my family and I can't tell you one thing my kids are wanting for either. We don't give them everything they want, we don't chase the dollar. We eat as a family, we take trips now and then, but we mostly have experiences TOGETHER and just hang out.

frick trying to get all of the things out there. The happiness people seek is staring them in the face if they look, and the price tag is free.

Jesus frick, I hope you don't allow her to talk on the phone or drive a car, and it goes without asking but surely you don't allow her to traipse around the kitchen with shoes on? Please tell me you don't.
