Why Fox News is Winning

There are plenty of reasons that explain Fox News’ ratings dominance over the past decade and a half, but a new poll from Quinnipiac University sheds light on at least one major factor: trust. When voters were asked “Whose news coverage do you trust the most?” Fox News beat out all other television news organizations – on network and cable. Here’s a look at the results (the numbers on the X axis are percentages; "don't know" responses are not shown):

You can see another aspect of Fox’s success if you break the numbers* down by party identification.

As you might expect, Fox is seen as “most trusted” by a sizeable majority of Republicans – and by almost no Democrats. But Fox is also viewed as “most trusted” by one-in-four Independents – the highest among any network.
Conversely, look at the party ID of MSNBC. Not only do they rate worst of all networks among Republicans (2 percent), but they’re also are last among Independents (6 percrent). Compounding the problem, even Democrats don’t view MSNBC as the most trustworthy source of news on television. That honor goes to CNN.
How many times have we heard someone say that Fox News and MSNBC are simply mirror images of each other? The numbers from the Quinnipiac poll show that comparison is wrong. One of the reasons Fox News keeps winning is that it has managed to build a solid reputation for its news coverage, one that extends beyond right-leaning viewers. And one of the reasons MSNBC keeps losing is that its programming – even during the daytime – has become so opinion driven that not even its fellow ideological travelers view it as a trustworthy source of news any more.

Here's another interesting study about Fox News, and how they're the least informed of all the viewers/listeners... Fox News viewers least informed.
So basically, Fox viewers trust their source the most, yet are the dumbest of all news watchers. They are so dumb, they knew less about current events than people who didn't watch the news. Coincidence?

Fox News is a featured on basic cable programming, while msnbc is not. CNN doesn't have the exciting topics or hosts. Fox News feeds its viewers from some of the poorest regions of the country (the South), and MSNBC gets most of their viewers from the West coast (Microsoft and NBC joint venture). CNN is one of the most unbiased networks, but doesn't get the viewership because it is boring.
Also, I am leery of any Private, for profit universities who produce polls.

The demographic and age range of people that purchase cable favor Fox's agenda.
That would be my guess.
Anyone mainstream news outlet is awful. That's a given at this point.

Somewhere, there's a picture of Megyn Kelly doing an inadvertent impersonation of Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct

That most certainly varies by provider. Fox and MSNBC are both basic cable channels where I live.

All this tells me is the propel that watch Fox News watch it for the confirmation bias the network delivers.

Fox wins by keeping a loyal audience engaged by manufacturing outrage. MSNBC loses because they put out a bad and obviously biased product.
It's also hard to buy the independent results because pissed off with the GOP super conservative =/= middle. In today's climate, it's a fair bet a disproportionate amount of "independents" skew conservative. A left to right scale would have been a clearer comparison.
