I think that in order for this thing to work we need to agree on what the requirements for admission into the field of 16.

I think record sales are a prerequisite. I saw a lot of bands mentioned last night that were great bands in their own right, but a couple of them I had never even heard of before, to be honest. And while people may LOVE the music from a certain group, at the end of the day the greatest bands sell the most records.

So ACDC is definitely a #1 seed, for instance, because they have smashed most all others in record sales alone.

I don't know what the other requisites should be. Up for discussion I suppose. This thread will probably take awhile to play itself out, but I really would like to see if we can come to a fair consensus view for the title of Greatest Rock Band of All Time: Arkansas Off Topic Edition.

I would vote this dude into the field. I don't know why I didn't think of him before. Steve Miller is a frickin badass.

Perhaps number of hits and number of gold/platinum records?
You really need a bench mark for each seed level to determine if a band deserves the seed or not

Well, unless people would like to expand the field, there will only be four seeds. So that sounds pretty easy. Record sales, top 40 hits, and we will have to determine two more benchmarks. Maybe something other than popularity. Hell, I don't know, that's when you can add things like influence or something to try and reward musicianship a little more than how much the general public likes them.

ETA: years on tour sounds like a good one.

I’m not sure why Nirvana keeps being brought up. Two decent albums before Courtney murdered Kurt doesn’t make them great. Sure you can say Nevermind changes the rock landscape but something was going to anyways. Hair bands had run their course. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and AIC would done it anyways.

Elvis
AC/DC
Eagles
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Aerosmith

Pearl Jam
Alice In Chains
Stone Temple Pilots

Is this the list we're using?

The off-putting part of this is "of all time".

Anyone can look up which band made more money, but currency values certainly change over decades.

When you were coming of age, what group had songs that you laughed to, sang along with your friends to, made love to ?

Thats the greatest rock band of all time !

Well the idea is to get the brackets set up so everyone can vote on their favorite songs. Best of 7 advances.

You have to use some sort of metric system for determining what bands get into the field. Otherwise there would be 500 bands listed in this thread because everyone would want obscure bands in the mix because they listened to that one album the first time they got stoned.

If it's "off putting" to you, don't participate.

I had them in my earlier list and why record sales may not be the most important metric. Not only were they popular in their era but I constantly hear them in soundtracks for movies today.

As to OP

While I get 500 obscure bands is too much, you really do need to look at least a few who broke barriers to advance the concept of the Rock and Roll band or at least influenced them over just their popularity or record sales. Without say Chuck Berry, do we even have Rock and Roll at all?

Chuck Berry = Father of R&R
James Brown = Godfather of Soul
Elvis = King
Prince = Prince

am I really seeing that none of you have any respect for the Allman Brothers?

They're one of the top ten bands of all time

I also agree with all of these.

It's a daunting task to try to come up with a single #1 greatest R&R band.

This isn't as easy as, say, #1 WR of all time.

On second thought, Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band is the greatest R&R band.

I meant Rock & Roll.

:kige:

I think you are old enough to remember that his first 2 albums were old country and flopped worse than Duke basketball.

It was even in the lyrics from a song off Li3/4T or WSPC (still his t best) about how he had to chance formats to be a success. Maybe his lyrics from those albums were made up but "West Nashville" and "Hold Up" had to be him or someone close to him.

Buffet from Magaritaville on was more pop than anything else. I do know he stole "Gods own DrunK" from somebody (Canadian) in the generation before him.

Problem with Buffet, is like LS, where do they fall outside their primary fan base?

I think I was the only one to mention The Who, but that started the rock opera and gave LS their big break as the opening act. I liked Living Color as black heavy metal but may never have heard them if not for the Stones allowing them to open their act (and got booed off stage when I saw them live).

Nobody doubts The Allman Brothers, but I would put Skynyrd ahead of them (especially if the crash had not happened) and I might even put Black Oak ahead of them but in full disclosure I was in AR back then and may have been biased by that. Clearly Black Oak had a sound full of other roots but crafted as rock.

Also legit.

Another older "heavy metal" band that doesn't get recognized like they deserve is Deep Purple.

And then another of my top R&R bands that is undervalued is Thin Lizzy.

One my father's favorites that he turned me to is Ten Years After.

If you haven't listened to any of them, you're missing out.
