I would like to propose we, The Arkansas Off Topic Board, settle this debate once and for all.

The way we do that is we set up a tourbament bracket for 16 bands, list out their best songs and pit the bands one against each other and let the other Arkansas posters vote on them. Best of 7 advances. So each band gets to throw their seven best tracks in against another.

If this is something the board would like to do, I would start off by saying we have to determine 16 bands first and foremost, and I believe these three bands deserve automatic bids and probable #1 seed status.

1. The Beatles
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Led Zeppelin

Add in ACDC as the other 1 seed since I think theyre way up there with number of records sold
I also nominate Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Don't know where I'd seed them but they had quite a few hits and are tGOAT
And the day this becomes an Arkansas board is the day I have a roasting pig as my avi

Depends on how you view greatest .....

Lynyrd Skynyrd opened for The Who and Pete and the boys admitted how good LS was. However, to the rest of the world LS was just a minor southern rock group.

If you say the Stones or the Beatles looking at groups that took American blues and repackaged it for white audiences.

Led Zeppelin and Santana had genuine unique band members (both had unique drummers) where you recognized their sound on any tune.

Do you leave out somebody like Bill Hayley and the Comets for being less popular yet allowing Rock and Roll to emerge from a generation of Pat Boone music.

I agree with ACDC as the final #1 seed.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Aerosmith, and The Who are the first that come to mind as potential #2 seeds.

You'll get no argument from me on Skynyrd. They were great. They'll be one of the 16 for sure.

Who would be the final 2 seed? Springsteen? Journey? The Eagles?

Are they seed worthy?

Some off the top of my head that would be well ahead of them and not already listed

Pink Floyd
The Who
The Doors
Jimi Hendrix
Eagles
Aerosmith
Guns N Roses (a bit commercial and packaged for me)
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Santana
Chuck Berry
Elvis Presley
Van Halen
Beach Boys
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Queen

Pink Floyd

Where does a band like Guns n Roses fit? They were massive in the 80's and early 90's. Also, Metallica had a lot of radio hits. I just don't where to rank them after they went mainstream.

The 90's Seattle bands wrecked some shite for a decade.

Why did rock seem to disappear?

Yes. Petty's song writing is pretty good and IIRC the red hot chili pepper's actually ripped off of mary jane's last dance

They are definitely in the field. Appetite for Destruction is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

Queen or the Eagles are more deserving of the 2 than Springsteen I'd say, or maybe GNR or the Doors

Was going to say Doors, should be on a list somewhere. Where are we cutting the list at? What year?

Well, it can't be too recent. Otherwise the newer bands can't really compare in terms of record sales.

The newest band I can think of that probably deserves a spot in the field is Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Someone else already dropped CCR and the Doors.

Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden should should all be in the 5-7 seed range....maybe a little higher. They all changed the direction of rock. It seemed to pretty much flop after them.

Don't know, maybe post British Invasion to the 90s, at least based on most of the bands that have been listed
