Beautiful. I've been playing mandolin a lot lately too. God I love playing mandolin.

Yeah, mandolin is cool, its sounds beautiful, you can walk down the hall, and through doors playing, into your childrens room and drive them crazy. That's how you make them interested in guitar and banjo.

Open G to Open D. If something ain't right, you'll hear it immediately.
Then immediately go through the harmonics, wiggle the whammy bar on the last one, just to make sure it is in there good.
Finally, open E and let it ring while I turn knobs on the amp and pedals.

Intro to Wilco's "Patient With Me" or Elliott Smith's "Some Folk Song in C".

Call of Ktulu by Metallica is always a nice warm up appregio, as is Simple Man from Skynrd. I'll do some 1,2,3,4 with all four fingers up and down the neck, some bluesy bends. Master of Puppets and Battery for speed riffing. A few finger picking parts, middle clean section of To Live Is To Die, Broken by Seether.

I always start with Metallica - Nothing Else Matters. It's an easy start that slowly builds. My favorite warm up.

I like to go to the Off-Topic board and brag first, personally.

Never played but wanted to.. Any tips to start out
Learn these four chords: G Em C and D. You can play hundreds of songs with just them, and they are fairly easy chords to learn. Some songs have them in that order, some songs may be G D Em C (Don't Stop Believing and bunches of others.) Always the first four I teach a new student to get them going.
Also, be patient. You are developing muscle memory to form the chords. Do it slow and RIGHT and gradually increase the speed.
The biggest thing... have fun! If you start getting frustrated, put it down and so something else for a bit. Remember, Stevie Ray started out the same way.

This is exactly what I do. Then follow it with some combo of d and c. No idea why
