Scottish, English (booo! William the Conqueror line from paternal great grandmother? Don't care, screw the cuck Brits until they start fighting back), German through maternal grandmother, a smidgen of Cherokee, a tiny minute sliver of Italian (yes!)

I've never done any of the DNA analyses like 23 and me, but I do have lineage traced back to the 1300s on one side and mid 1700s on the other.

Best I can tell, roughly a quarter Irish, quarter French, a quarter Kaskaskia/Peoria, and a mishmash of other random stuff.

German/French from my mother. English by way of Ireland from pops. The earliest record of my last name is from the late 1500s in Derbyshire, England.

Up until my mother had a DNA test done, she had told us we all had Cherokee blood. She had less Indian blood than Elizabeth Warren.

KSG mentioned this earlier.

My MIL tells everyone she has some Cherokee blood because her grandfather had jet black hair and she gets dark tan in the summer.

My BIL had a test done, and he showed nil American Indian blood. All Northern European.

My MIL still tells people the above story.

My family are mutts of Europe. French, Irish and German. If you go by stereotypes that means I'm a rude drunk but highly organized.

And every single one of those ancestors knew damn well Pineapple on pizza is blasphemy.

I don't understand why it's so common. It seems like every other girl in the South is "part Cherokee".

Hell if I know. I called her out when she did it before and call her out now.

Carolina Girl and at least one other poster have said it in this thread.

Maybe the high cheek bones thing? That hybrid vigor?

It's because the old timers around here insist that any woman with dark hair must be part Cherokee.

I would say it's a huge nod of respect to Cherokee women.

ETA: Also, I bet that first generation of Americans to fully kinda realize what expansion did to the indigenous peoples probably try to emphasize their "native roots" because they felt guilty.

My last name does end in "field" which is why I misspelled my username on here and didn't realize it. The first part of my last name is from a Norse word meaning 'hill pasture'. So basically my last name means "field field".

I always figured it was a way for a family to gloss over black heritage.
