Maybe "smoked one cigarette" is code for something else in their lives. In England, for example, cigarettes are called figs. Are they British?

It's been pretty crazy to be part of a generation that has watched smoking go from being so socially acceptable to a stigma. First time I ever flew, dad made me sit in the smoking section of the plane with him. Blows my mind to remember there used to be a smoking section on commercial flights. Can even remember ashtrays at the ends of some aisles in the grocery stores.
