I remember this from Sunday school, this is Jesus's famous "negging" technique of shepherding the lost into his flock

He would be proud

Everyone in Europe will have access to healthcare because they're all covered, and they do not have to worry about being wiped out by healthcare debt, unlike many in this country.

So far in Western Europe and Scandinavia, 69.3 people out of every million have died.

In the United States, 9.6 people out of every million have died.

So you are saying you'd prefer a healthcare system that allows 7x more people die but ensures you don't get a bill for any treatment? Okay then. I would rather have a better chance of living.

My point is not to get into a healthcare debate... my point is that the US media coverage of this pandemic has been appalling. I did not even vote for Trump and I'm flabbergasted at how the media would rather play "Gotcha!" during press conferences than actually cover what's going on.

Its embarrassing for journalism that they demand we only talk about stats regarding Testing on a per capita basis, but they don't dare report deaths on a per capita basis. I pay attention to a lot of news, and I've yet to hear one major news outlet compare the deaths in the US and in Europe on a per capita basis. Why is that? Is it because they are more interested in their agenda than what's actually going on?

I clearly explained why that's the case. You do realize we have varying mortality rates of COVID19 throughout this country. To add to the facts, Western Europe(EU) has a much higher population in a smaller area. Higher concentrations of people with larger elderly populations in many countries is why. Combine that with the fact that they are further along in the pandemic and you have your reasons. It has nothing to do with the quality of their healthcare system.

The only area where our healthcare system matches up with Western Europe is the quality of care, ie doctors and technology. In every other way, our healthcare system is worse for a citizen. The US healthcare system is great for insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry.

This has no relevance to anything I stated, so I don't have an opinion.

Age, smoking habits, population density, etc. all certainly play a part in it.... but you also have reports of hospitals in Northern Italy turning people away who are over the age of 60. So yes, while those factors you mentioned matter, so too does the fact that their health care system is not as advanced. Let's not pretend it has nothing to do with the quality of care. Yes, in the US we pay a high monetary price for healthcare, but it also serves us in times like these because we are better prepared despite what the media wants you to believe.

Ours exceeds theirs in these categories... by a wide margin. And other than quality of care, doctors, and technology, what other factors matter when it comes to healthcare? That's literally everything except for cost..... so are we back to saying we'd prefer 7x the fatalities to save a little money?

quote:

The US healthcare system is great for insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry.

And for those individuals who survive here but otherwise wouldn't have in Europe. Again, is this all about $$$?

Well it has 100% relevance to my post yesterday in which you decided to take down the healthcare avenue. My entire point was that there is a ton of criticism aimed at the US' preparedness yet those same people criticizing refuse to acknowledge the fact those health care systems they are constantly claiming to be superior to ours were just as unprepared if not worse off, and the death rates in those countries are exponentially higher.

Here is another stat about ICU beds available by country... its from a Forbes article about two weeks ago.

COUNTRIES WITH THE MOST CRITICAL CARE BEDS PER CAPITA:

34.7- United States
29.2- Germany
12.5- Italy
11.6- France
10.6- South Korea
9.7- Spain
7.3- Japan
6.6- United Kingdom
3.6- China
2.3- India

"Why can't our healthcare be more affordable?" they said, all the while we have 5x capacity for ICU beds and all the equipment that comes with that compared to the UK.

Sadly we can't have it both ways. We can either make healthcare more affordable, or we can sacrifice technology and quality of care. You can't have both.

It's times like these in a global pandemic that make it pretty evident why America has always chosen to pay a bit more but have better care.

Meanwhile the negative Nancy's of the world will complain about both.

I think most should acknowledge that as a whole since we have started to take this serious. We as a country, have done a great job overall and that is at many different levels. I do think there is some criticism that can be made about us taking it more seriously sooner. I don't really care about pushing that point though. I'm very pleased at how we have been handling it.

I agree with all of this.

America's strengths are on display at this point. No other country could get businesses to crank out thousands of extra masks per day, hundreds of new ventilators per day, and come up with a new test that can show results in less than 15 minutes all within a month of this thing happening.... not to mention mobilize two aircraft carriers to care for the sick and turn large convention halls like the Javitz center into a 1,000 bed hospital in roughly one week.

America is truly exceptional.

As a former journalist, I can attest that journalism quit being embarrassed a long time ago. It's about agendas, page views and clicks. The one or two newspapers that still cite growth are usually lying about it because while they tout their "growth", they're not telling you about the fact they're laying off workers on a quarterly, almost monthly basis.
