Agreed, but we're a very gay-friendly country. It's just strange

I think it's because our best athletes play football or basketball. That leaves soccer only to our rich white kids, for the most part. Put Percy Harvin and Julio Jones on the soccer team and we'd be much better

Not necessarily. They probably wouldn't be much better than anyone else we have on the roster today. If they were born today, they would have a better chance of being really good.

Harvin would probably be better than Julio.

Wouldn't Blake Griffin, Ginobili, and Chris Paul be better. Isn't soccer basically a giant flop fest?

Agreed. Soccer is a game for children.

It's a skill problem, not an athlete problem. The best overseas go to academies at a very young age and get professional coaching from then on. Here academy systems are just getting started. We always have the athletes, but the skill on the ball has been sorely lacking.

No, it's easier to get noticed today, there's better coaching, and better academy options.

I'm shocked that we're still not great at soccer.

The U.S. Women's team is the best national team in the world...

it is a few problems that hold soccer back. the academies over sees really give them a edge, also soccer is their number 1 or 2 sports. here it is way back on the back burner so it is using fourth and fifth tier athletes

we have seen great strides lately in correcting that and the growth of the mls can help us. also like you said the start up of soccer academies will help

Hockey is by far the best team sport at the olympics, summer or winter.

The NHL sends its best. Unlike basketball, more than one team is stacked with pro talent.

Even if you don't like hockey, it's entertaining.

I watched a good bit of Hockey for the first time in the last Olympics. It got me interested and I've been watching more and more NHL over the past few years, definitely my third favorite sport to watch now.

We're the largest advanced country in the world. And we have the Rocky Mountains. Not sure why it's surprising.
We also have a large population to draw athletes from. We can put multiple athletes in every event. Compare that to a country like Switzerland that is a alpine nation, but the smaller population means less athletes in the talent pool, and therefore less of a chance to have someone medal.

Yeah, Hockey is awesome. It's my second favorite sport after football.

To some degree this is true, but not nearly to the extent most argue it. If our best athletes focused on soccer, we'd just have a shitton of wing players. Different needs for soccer compared to football and basketball. Our best athletes for soccer tend to get herded in that direction now a days. There are certainly exceptions, but for the most part I'd argue it's true.

Ya, the Finals last year erased any doubt of how awesome hockey was. Three or four OT games, and the flurry of goals at the end of game 6 for Chicago to win it.

Yeah, I was pulling for the Bruins. I don't care for the Blackhawks.
