Well, I live in SELA among a lot of them & say "coonass" all the time to my coonass friends. They don't consider it a slur.

I can say coonass because all my frans in LA call themselves that and have had me call them the same since my childhood. If I changed now it would create awkward pauses.

Never heard anybody take offense to being called a coonass. Mostly because anybody who would claim to be a coonass would

a) be proud of it
b) not give a shite
c) tell that dick where he can go shove it

In Conclusion;

No.

If coonass is a racial slur then so is redneck, hillbilly, hick, etc.

I have never once heard or seen "coonass" used as an insult nor seen anyone ever take offense to being called one.

The first time I heard spook used as a racial slur was in Gran Torino. For some reason I started laughing at the response Eastwood's character received for saying it.

If it's similar, then why did you type out coonass but abbreviate the other word?
