The process of extracting metals from ore? Try heating it up.

You're welcome.

Roommate and good friend at Alabama was in metallurgical engineering at UA. He got a BS and MS. Went on to work for the Navy and now NASA.

I was a little Civil Engineering major.

Does the Knoxville area have a lot of metal ore deposits?

No...but it is adjacent to Arconic's (formerly Alcoa) aluminum cast house. More importantly, it is near Oak Ridge National Laboratory (managed by a joint venture between UT and Battelle). ORNL has a huge Material Sciences Division which includes Metal Additive Manufacturing (3d printing different metal alloys).

They've done cool stuff like...3d print an excavator.

Sorry this thread got moved. Snowflake LSU mods got triggered about an innocuous thread about LSU fans taking campus dirt into Alabama, and they wanted to move that thread, and this thread got caught in the crossfire.

No big deal. Just imagine if they moved all "off-season threads" at once...the huge vacuum it would leave on t-Rant.

Why? You'll get a better discussion about the subject here then you would over there.

I haven't been to NREL or Sandia...but I did get a chance to finally spend some time at Argonne earlier this year. Hoping to get a chance to visit PNNL next Spring.
