Mostly country club/yacht club sports but still significant.
“As you may know, Stanford currently offers more varsity sports than nearly every other Division I university in the nation. Our goal is to provide excellent support and a world-class experience for our student-athletes in the sports that we offer. Over time, however, providing 36 varsity teams with the level of support that they deserve has become a serious and growing financial challenge.
“We now face the reality that significant change is needed to create fiscal stability for Stanford Athletics, and to provide the support we believe is essential for our student-athletes to excel.

Which is how they always win the Directors Cup.

Good by automatic All Sports Trophy wins.

Squash and synchronized swimming are understandable. But no sailing?

Men's volleyball is probably the biggest of the group. They have won some natties.
But its significant because this is one of the reasons they always win the Learfield cup. Loading up on sports that only a few schools play.

Yet their endowment is 27.7 BILLION with a B

Exactly why football will happen this fall, schools need that $$$.

It's not unusual for universities to have multi-billion dollar endowments. Sorry LSU can't afford the entry fee for the club.

Never quite understood why they never seem to tap into that money. All schools have huge endowments, but I never hear of them dipping into it.

If they dipped into them, they wouldn't have those huge endowments for long.
The key is to foster growth of the endowment, reinvest enough of the proceeds to ensure continued growth in the future, and live off whatever proceeds can safely be distributed without jeopardizing future growth goals.
Just like individual retirement saving, the goal is to never touch the principal.

I get that, but 27 billion allows for a lot of annual profit taking without really shrinking it that much.

Beautiful!!!
Another domino falls......
The value of the Revenue Athletes is exploding right before our very eyes!
The more fragile that P5 Sports become, the easier it is to see how immensely valuable the Revenue Athletes are and how fair it is to give them larger cash stipends on top of their full scholly
MBB is no more than 15% of the Revenue Generated at P5 schools, missing out on March Madness causes Stanford to cut 11 Sports, imagine what happens if we miss a year of CFB?
Notice what you don't hear:
No one is saying a damn thing about Title IX, mainly because you can't enforce something if there's no money to pay for it, if this FB Season goes away T9 is on life-support or dead
Onward we march towards larger cash stipends for the Revenue Athletes
What did that guy from the A-Team like to say?
I LOVE IT WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER

The $27 Billion is an Academic Endowment, the Athl Dept has a separate endowment, don't know how big it is though

Because endowments are restricted assets.

Bingo.
Now, for the record, 27 billion is a lot of money. A nice chunk of change you might say. The problem is that Stanford is not only a university offering an elite education (I think they are ranked in the top 5 colleges in the country), which costs a lot of pull off, they are also located in the Bay Area.
Now San Francisco and its neighbors might not be the single most expensive place to live in the US... but its not from lack of trying. If, say, Arkansas, A&M, or LSU wants to expand the campus they might have to pay a pretty penny to do so but it wouldn't be obscenely expensive.
Expanding the campus at Stanford would cost so much money that Bill Gates would wince at the price tag.
As for the sports getting cancelled, well I'm shocked. Shocked I say. Certainly none of us have stated multiple times on this forum that colleges are spending money like drunken sailors on shore leave, particularly when it comes to athletics.
Even with money coming in from TV contracts that adds up real quick. We were bound to see a contraction of sports at the university level... it just so happens that an economic armageddon brought on by the pandemic has sped up things dramatically.
