I've got a buddy getting married down there in April, so I am thinking about taking a few days off and making an extended weekend out of it. Worth it? What is there to do besides play golf? TIA

Hang out at frat beach and eat at touristy restaurant like the crab trap and brogen's. Possibly get shot in Brunswick.

SSI is a great coastal town. Eat at Brogen's in the village, visit Ft Frederica, and catch blue crabs off the pier.

And for the love of God go to Southern Soul for BBQ

Jekyll island is also an easy drive over the bridge and is pretty nice to walk and bike

Where are you staying? That completely changes what I'd offer for advice.

some helpful advice from someone who lived there for 22 years:
1. Stay at the resorts. There's nothing really that you need to concern yourself off them. Cant give golf recommends without knowing where you are staying
2. Eat at the touristy restaurants. Im not a fan but they'll give you what you want. The best restaurants on the island are not for tourists and not what you're looking for. Also, brunswick has some great restaurants too.
3. Don't be a jackass that gets a golf cart.

Realize that it's a residential area and tourists make the fricking place insufferable.

I can offer more helpful advice if I knew where you were staying

Where do you recommend staying? We have a house Thurs-Sunday for all of the groomsmen, but I was thinking about going down on my own on Tuesday for an extra couple of days.

Also, define touristy. I spend most of my beach time at Pawley's Island, SC and am not a huge fan of those types of places there. I like the "hole in the wall" feel if the food is great. Thanks for all of the responses.

Budget matters and age. I'd probably stay at the Village Inn. It has a pub that has live music during most weekends.

I'd also consider staying at the King and Prince just because of some perks (tennis, pool, etc). When I return home to visit I often go for drinks at the bar there.

I doubt you want to spend the 400-800 a night to stay at one of the ritzy places lol.

Bars aren't great. I would not recommend Brogans South. If you want a bar and incredibly trashy but possible to have fun, rafters in the village. If you want a college aged bar that will usually have hot women, Bunba Garcia in the village. If you want incredibly diva dive bar with some unique individuals, Murphys in the village. If you want drunk milfs, go to ziggys. Mullet bay is ok because of the scenery.

IMHO, best food on the island are the Italian trifecta. Sals, Nazzaros, and Trimici. Nazzaros is rather formal but the other two are a bit more casual. Don't get pizza at any of them though. A new popular restaurant is Del Sur, its Argentinian and not cheap but none of the restaurants are that cheap. Stay away from the red barn. It's sucks.

Stuff to do?

Cheapest golf is at sea palms I believe though I could be dead wrong.

Jekyll island for 2-3 hours is pretty cool but I would not recommend staying there. There's a sea turtle hospital you can go visit.

Downtown Brunswick is a lot like Savanah in some places.

I have to go to work so I can't say anything else

I've never been impressed by their food. I can get better BBQ at several places here in Atlanta.

One of my favorite foods on SSI is the fried shrimp at Iguanas. They really are as good as advertised.

It's not the honey hole in the middle f nowhere that will change your life kind of BBQ but they do a lot of things really well and by my estimation it's certainly worth trying out

I've tried it several times. We spend a couple of weeks a year there. Gonna be spending more since my wife was hired as a prosecuting attorney and the PACGA summer conference is on Jekyll.

I've had far worse BBQ. Far far worse. I've just had far better too. I'll go out of my way to have the pork chop sandwich at Willies Wee-Nee Wagon in Brunswick than I will to have their BBQ though.

Where? That's some of the best BBQ I've ever had. Especially the stew. I'd like to know where you're going in Atlanta that is as good as that cause I would love to visit.

Barbara jeans is good. Crab trap is all fried. Mullet bay is decent. I can't remember the name of the place we went this last time but it's right there "downtown" near Barbara jeans. Very good. Used to go every summer in high school with a buddies family who was from there. Just went back for the first time since about 2 months ago.

Pretty much every bbq rating in the world it seemed had southern soul at least top 5 if it top 2 in the us. It's damn good bbq.

Fox Bros. and Heirloom for starters. I would add Community Q to that list.

I've tried Southern Soul a handful of times and I've never been impressed. I wanted to like it. I continue to be disappointed though.

No mention of Ziggy's? And you're from there? My cousins live there. I go to Ziggy's every chance I get. I am also 29. Not sure your age.

Look for Indigo Coastal Shanty in Brunswick. Awesome food and service.

If you like to fish maybe try a charter for inshore fishing. Should be a good time of year.
