Turkey's military announced on Friday night that army had taken over “the entire management of the country to restore rule of law” as the country's prime minister admitted an “attempt” by a group within the military while falling short of calling it a military coup.
Reuters, citing a witness, reported that gunshots were heard in Ankara shortly before 11 p.m. local time Friday.
As military helicopters flew over the entertainment hub of Beyoglu district in Istanbul, television aired footage of military tanks and TV stations reported Turkish state TV TRT had been taken over by military officials.

Yeah, I think any lingering hope of EU membership just got the last nail in its coffin.
The EU generally like to keep things pretty "coup-free" these days.
(Then again, they do have a new vacancy.)

I wonder where the current military leadership stands on Russia relations, this could get interesting

Good. Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan is an Islamist despot who has been trying to change their Constitution so that he has more power. He wanted to change Turkey from a secular society to an Islamic one.

They're pro-American. They've pledged to honor all alliances, including with Israel, and return Turkey to civilian rule.

That's what I've been gathering too. If that is the case, then kudo's to some pro-Democracy heads in the military. Our folks could stand to learn a little from this.

This is will be something like the fifth time they have overthrown the government. Each time they have returned the rule of the country to its people. They take the guardianship of Atatürk's legacy very seriously. I'm not too concerned.

Uh, you just call for a coup here, bro?
I was nowhere near this thread. Have fun in Gitmo.

Or the Democrats and Republicans could nominate better candidates. Or America could wake up and vote for Gary Johnson.

I'm a novice when it comes to coups, but wouldn't you want to capture the president as the first step of the coup?

That's the way I see it too.
It took the military to keep Egypt from going full Islamic crazy state. Hopefully, Turkey's can pull it off too.

He was on vacation at Marmaris on their coast when the coup began. He said he would immediately return to Ankara but instead has apparently fled the country.

As mentioned already, they've had to do it several times before. Turkey and Egypt represent countries where democracy is used to vote in governments that want to end democracy. Thankfully, their militaries think democracy should persist.
