quote:

Astronomers are set to scan an 'alien' comet for signs of extraterrestrial technology.

The cigar-shaped asteroid, named 'Oumuamua by its discoverers, sailed past Earth last month and is the first interstellar object seen in the solar system.

A team of alien-hunting scientists, led by Russian billionaire Yuri Milner, will scan the comet this week before it sails beyond the reach of Earth's telescopes. They say they are looking for radio signals, claiming the mysterious visitor could be an alien spaceship

quote:

While a natural origin is more likely, there is currently no consensus on what that origin might have been, and Breakthrough Listen is well positioned to explore the possibility that ‘Oumuamua could be an artefact.' The alien-hunting project will use the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia for its investigation.

quote:

The object will fly past Jupiter next year, and will hurtle beyond Pluto by the 2020s. 'Whether it's artificial or not, we will definitely know more about this object,' Milner told the Atlantic. Oumuamua, also known as Comet C/2017 U1, baffled scientists when it flew past Earth at breakneck speed in November

So, more than likely not Aliens but still pretty cool...also very scary to think about. This thing is small but imagine if it were much larger. We first noticed it in mid/late October and it was up on us in November, flying in at high speed from deep space. It obviously missed us but what if the next one doesn't and is bigger? Frightening to think how little time we'd all have.

How fast is this bad boy going? If it won't reach pluto until 2020 that's just some more perspective on how fuggin big space is.

Oumuamua is traveling at almost 59,000 mph. By comparison, the New Horizons craft that flew by Pluto is moving at a little over 36,000 mph. The Voyager spacecraft started out from earth at about 27,000 mph and is now at 38,000 mph after gravity assists from Jupiter and Saturn.

SO FAR AND FAST!

We need to just shoot scrap metal with "free sex with human aliens" carved into it in EVERY direction and see if anything bites. Maybe with pictures.

Well, there are three principal methods of reproduction in nature: Sexual, bisexual and asexual. Sex involves two related creatures, such as humans, that have complementary organs for exchanging DNA; bisexual reproduction is accomplished between two animals such as earthworms, that each have both organs for exchanging DNA; and, asexuality ignores DNA exchanges altogether. Asexual creatures merely clone themselves. A partner is not needed.

So, we can't assume that aliens reproduce the same way we do. A bisexual alien might assume that, since you have an opening in your head and your bottom, you like to have them both plugged at the same time.

Be careful what you advertise for.

Alright, that's a fair point. On the other side we should list all of our natural resources and our weapon capabilities.

That's an artist's concept above. For all we know now, the thing could look like a '56 Coupe DeVille.

That looks like a giant turd.

Seriously though, it is terrifying to think about how quickly we could have potentially gone from having aliens be something that we ponder but never really give serious thought to, to hey these frickers are here.

At that speed while it wouldn't have been a dinosaur killer it would have seriously messed up whatever part of the Earth it hit. Six cars nose to nose is about one hundred feet so it would 36 cars long and 6 cars deep. So, while the weight won't be the same, something around 216 cars worth of weight hitting the Earth at 59,000 MPH.

My math and physics skills suck but that would have to impact with an unreal amount of force.

By comparison with the Barringer Meteor that created Meteor Crater in Arizona, the Oumuamua asteroid would have caused horrific damage if it had hit anywhere a populated area. Depending on its composition, and because of its incredible speed, Meteor Crater might look like a popped zit in comparison to the crater Oumuamua would have gouged out.

The Barringer Meteor

quote:

was 150 feet across, weighed roughly 300,000 tons, and was traveling at a speed of 28,600 miles per hour (12 kilometers per second) according to the most recent research.

At 600 feet X 100 feet, Oumuamua is much larger and is moving at more than twice the speed of the Barringer Meteor. The impact would have been the equivalent to several times the power of the Tsar Bomba hydrogen bomb detonated by the Soviet Union, the largest explosion ever by mankind.

If it's made of the same stuff as the Barringer Meteor, iron-nickel, an impact would have been the most catastrophic earth event for humanity since the Toba supervolcano eruption 75,000 years ago.

Also, never doubt the genius that was Arthur C. Clarke.
