Just taking a look at the object, I can't be the only guy who thought of the alien probe from Star Trek IV that only wanted to talk to the humpback whales.

Lots of other factors to consider beyond size and speed in order to determine what sort of effect something like that would have in an impact with Earth. Composition and density are two of the major ones. Look at the Tunguska event. That thing didn't even strike the Earth, but it caused catastrophic damage over a very large area. And that happened very recently in the grand scheme of things.

I guess my only point here is that there are many factors in these things. One of the worst things that could happen is if a very large and fast object doesn't even impact Earth at all but came in close enough and hot enough to strip our atmosphere away in an instant. It could happen and it would kill us all.

Because the direction of an object such as the one you listed would be tangential, I don't think it would affect enough of the atmosphere to be universally fatal to life on earth. It would certainly pull away some of the air and dramatically heat up the atmosphere in the area where it made contact. The effects from the close encounter would be felt for a long time and might cause heavy damage to agriculture all over earth.

There is one potential catastrophe that could absolutely strip the earth if its atmosphere, a gamma ray burst. The cause of gamma ray bursts has been debated. It is now thought that they occur when a black hole is formed by an extremely powerful type of supernova. They may also occur when neutron stars collide.

Death would be instant on the side of the earth that directly encountered the rays but those living on the other side of the planet would suffocate as the atmosphere was thinned to levels that wouldn't support life.

That's an artist's concept above. For all we know now, the thing could look like a '56 Coupe DeVille.

Great. frickin' space Cubans are coming to our planet now. Trump needs to build a wall around the solar system.
