Here is the deal...
If we lose by one to Germany and Ghana wins by one against portgual, it comes down to goals scored. Right now, we have 3 and Ghana has 1.
The scary thing is Germany could beat us by 2 goals and all Ghana has to do is win by 1 and we are done.
Or if we lose to Germany by 1 and Ghana beats Portugal by 2 we are also fuct.
We need Portugal to tie or beat Ghana if we lose to Germany to be safe.

Heading into that match the United States are level on points with the group-leading Die Mannschaft, albeit with a three-goal deficit on goal differential. That means if the U.S. want to progress as group winners, thus avoiding having to play Belgium in the knockout stages, they need to beat Germany. However, a draw against Germany would still be enough to see the United States into the knockout stages in second place, in which case they would likely meet the Red Devils in the Round of 16.
If they lose to Germany:
quote:
If Portugal and Ghana draw, the United States will progress in second place. If Ghana win, they'd progress if they won by a couple of goals or more, or won by a single goal and the U.S. lost by more than one goal. If the United States and Ghana ended up level on goal differential, it would come down to who scored the most goals overall. If they were deadlocked still, the United States would progress as they've already beaten Ghana in the group stages.
If Portugal win, they'd need to overturn an even bigger goal differential deficit to progress ahead of the United States. Their goal differential heading into the final slate of games is minus-4, while the United States' is plus-1. That's a fairly big final swing Portugal require. If they pull it back level, it would again go down to who scored the most goals in the group stages overall. Still deadlocked? They'd end up drawing lots for progression -- picking a name out of a hat, essentially. Ouch.

This would put us at a tie for goals scored -- which would put us forward 'cause head to head. Germany needs to beat us by two, Ghana would need to win by 2 which would put them at +1 over us.
They need four total points, not 3 if it's goal scored.
Goal Differential is +1 for us, -1 for Ghana. Then it'd need to be three goals but we'd have the same amount of points overall, and that's where you're correct in saying 3 punts us.

Almost right. But is we lose by 1 and Ghana wins by 1, it is a tie and total goals is next.
What I posted is correct. What you quoted is corect.
Where you kept saying we advance due to H2H is wrong as that is way down the list on tie breakers.
In other words, if Germany beats us by 2, Ghana only needs to win by 1. Not 2.

You're editing your posts a lot so it's hard to directly reference what you said at the time, I'll make sure to quote you next time.
That's right -- if we tie on GD, it goes to goals scored and we have a pretty good lead there at 4, not 3 like you said above.
They have 3 total, so really they would go through anyway unless we really screwed the pooch against Germany.

Works for me.
We have to survive the first half tied against Germany. They will get cautious in a tie game in the second half.
In the first though, they will attack I'm afraid.

Both teams advance automatically with a draw, our coach is German. I think this one will be one of the more boring matches...
Unless we, or they, seek to eliminate the other.

I'm scared that might happen. Do you think that's what's going through both team's minds right now?
God, this shite is so damn complicated.
