I can get to Disney in an hour and a half from Gainesville, does that qualify us as a suburb of Orlando and not in the middle of nowhere?

That’s the vast majority of the country.

I am confused as to why being in the middle of nowhere is an insult? That is what makes a good college town.

Yes
If you had ever actually been to the middle of nowhere, you would know the difference. The Dakotas, Appalachia, Wyoming, etc.

Look. Just an honest opinion. Trying to be unbiased too.
You guys prop up Athens like it’s the blueprint of a perfect college town. Not my fault those expectations were set. It’s an average college town, congrats.

If someone hasn’t been to Georgia’s campus, I invite you to google their campus. It’s just concrete buildings. And then google Florida’s campus, and you’ll observe a bunch of brick and vine clad halls.
No comparison in that one.
This really isn't true outside of the Journalism Building and some of the Science/Math buildings on South Campus. I guess that's the area you were in if you only walked around Stegman, but the majority of Georgia's campus is red brick. Especially North Campus and the new business school area.

Did you walk through North Campus?
On a nice day, it’s hard to beat. If you’re there in the spring or on a nice day in the fall it’s going to be far superior to a rainy, cold Saturday.

Gainesville is on the same spectrum as Starkville

I walked from the Steg to Sanford stadium. Passed by physics building, consumer and family services (something like that?) and what appeared to be dorms. All were ugly concrete.

Agree with you on this though. They've tried to make Stegman look nice on the outside but it's extremely outdated. I don't think Campus has the space to build a new one, so they'd have to tear it down and build one in the same spot which would likely displace a lot of the sports for an extended period of time which isn't a real option for the athletic department.

Unfortunately, that's pretty much the only ugly area of campus. As suggested above, if you make it back to Athens I suggest looking around North Campus which is closer to downtown. Much prettier.

I went to Athens on Saturday for the Florida-Georgia game. Here’s my observations:
1) The Steg is shitty. How can Georgia not afford to replace it?
Can't argue. They've been putting band aids on that cancer for years. Needs to be replaced but UGA has other current priorities, like education. BTW, I've been to The Swamp. Good name for it.
2) Downtown is super overrated (but I can see partiers liking it)
You really lost me and others who've been to Athens here. You must be 80, or a total nerd.
3) The campus buildings are ugly.
I've never heard that said of UGA before. Did you really visit the campus? I've been to UF several times, so I know you're not coming from an Ivy League School for comparison.
4) Georgia fans really don’t know basketball.
And we really don't GAS. It's not a sport.
5) Creature Comfort was good, but super crowded and slow.
A place that's good is usually super crowded. You attract crowds when you have a good product. Businesses kinda like crowds. Again, are you 80 or a nerd?
6) The weather was crappy, so may have had some effect on the atmosphere.
We've tried and tried, but even UGA can't do anything about the weather. Let me know next time you're coming, though, and I'll see what I can do.
7) Athens is in the middle of nowhere.
okay, here's where you really lost me. You realize that Athens is an hour outside of Atlanta, right? And your school is in Gainesville frickin' Florida!
All-in-all, I have my doubts as to whether or not you really visited Athens. If you did, other than the Stegman comment, you're a pretty shitty judge of colleges/towns.

Come on UGa, you can do better than this. I thought Athens and the UGa campus were supposed to be the GOAT?

I’ve been to every college town in the SEC other than College Station now.
Athens is middle of the pack.
Maybe I’ll do a ranking.

I promise to walk through north campus next time. I’ll probably make sure to not have my pregnant wife with me and do a guys weekend there for a football game so we can go nuts.
Again, I can see how college kids and parties like downtown and bar hop. I didn’t get that chance this time.

RT^
2) Downtown is super overrated (but I can see partiers liking it)
When were you there? It’s not great on a rainy afternoon, but it’s a great time at night depending on where you go.
3) The campus buildings are ugly.
Some are. Most aren’t.
4) Georgia fans really don’t know basketball.
I’ve been saying this for a long time![]()
So many of our fans never watched/played basketball so they don’t know the rules. A lot of booing on correct calls which always frustrates me. Probably 50% of our students never watched a game until they were on campus.
5) Creature Comfort was good, but super crowded and slow.
That’s generally a sign of a good place. If you wanted somewhere a little less crowded, Terrapin or SBC would have probably been a better option. Terrapin probably wasn’t as crowded as normal because of the weather.
6) The weather was crappy, so may have had some effect on the atmosphere.
For sure. Cold and/or wet days in January/February suck. For sure my least favorite time in Athens (as someone who doesn’t like the cold)
7) Athens is in the middle of nowhere
Not necessarily the easiest to get to, but 1.5 hours from Atlanta and Augusta. I wouldn’t say Gainesville’s in the middle of nowhere, but if you would than Athens probably is too.
