Wife got a job offer downtown Lexington that I don't think we can turn down so it looks like we will be relocating from Birmingham by the end of the year. I work in construction and will be needing a job. Any recommendations on where to live, eat, etc.

Lexington is one of the anchors for Kentucky’s golden triangle which includes Louisville and Cincinnati at the other points. The city is about 70 miles from both of the other anchors and they are about 100 miles apart.

More than half of the Commonwealth’s population live within the triangle. Great interstate roads make access to all of the cities and towns easy.

This will be important to you since you’re in construction. There’s a lot going on all over the triangle but the northern Kentucky area, a.k.a. Greater Cincinnati, is exploding in population growth and construction projects.

For that reason, I’d recommend Georgetown as the ideal place for your family. Your wife would have an easy drive to downtown Lexington and you would be close to all the construction action.

Lots of construction in the area. As far as where to live, if you are city people then live in Lexington itself, but if you like to be out a bit from the city, many great communities 20 minutes away by car. Some small towns close by, and some smaller towns close by.

Food. Lexington has many of the expected chains, but also some good local places, Winchell's, Sawyers are good places.

Except in the winter. They get all the cold, wind and ice, but none of the snow.

For places to eat, there's Ramsey's in town it's self (cat fish there is good). There is red state bbq outside of Lexington in Georgetown (hole in the wall kinda place but very good). If you prefer chains, Cracker barrel in Nicholasville (Just south of lexington) is one of the better ones I've eaten at.
As for places to live, Lexington is not a rough place by any means, so you would be ok living in town, unless you hate urban locations. If you do dislike it, as others have mentioned, there are much smaller communities that are less than 20 minutes from town
As for construction jobs, there's several firms in the area building stuff/renovating stuff for the university so they will be hiring I imagine, as UK is trying to modernize all it's buildings.

In town there’s also the giant $330 million project that’s transforming the Convention Center and the park adjoining it.

True. There's a lot going on. Town is expanding, as is the campus

Fwiw I've heard Wilhelm is working on one of the parking garages on campus, and I know they've been doing a lot of work in Indianapolis so they get plenty of work. But, they travel a lot

Interesting, most of my experience is in these kinds of projects. Gives me something to look up.

They are redoing all of the area around rupp arena, including updates to the arena itself. Bringing the town branch creek back above ground in some areas as it flows thru some of the city.

One of the most underrated SEC football trips, especially in the fall.

I’ve spent some time there. Very nice town.

They love their horses and bourbon.

I'd move back to Lexington in a heartbeat. It's a phenomenal place to call home. You'll be very happy there.
