Then what would have been the better punishment...

Retaining ownership, but banned from his own teams games and NBA functions?

Forced to sell and making an extra billion on it than if sold under other circumstances?

And if there wasn't a monetary issue to begin with, why the huge fine by the NBA commish?

There really isn't one within the rules available. This is a best case scenario for the NBA.

For all, I'd say.

While technically true, he effectively just doubled his net worth.

Lot more to leave to family and charities when he dies.

Honestly what rubs me the wrong way is how some people (usually Stern apologists, although I honestly don't remember or care what your reaction to his words was) are quick to proclaim this as some sort of moral victory and be happy for Stern like he's been vindicated.

Good for him.

I'll never begrudge someone profiting.

Damn glad he's out of the league.

In my opinion, they could have made their point without conceding to the group think dogpile. The problem is with what this says, not with punishing a racist. It tells the mob they have the power to do whatever they wish.

kicking him out was absolutely the correct move in the broad sense of what is "right".

I thought it could end up bad for the NBA pending legal battles with sterling. guess everything got solved before that had to happen.

Don't mistake me as supporting him or as an apologist for him.

At best, I'm just totally indifferent to the entire situation. People have prejudices, from the poorest to the richest. What matters, to me, is how they treat people outwardly. I don't really give a crap what goes on inside their own heads. I'm sure I would be castigated for some thoughts I have on occasion, as anyone else would at any given point in time.

I suppose the thing that disturbs me on the entire issue, (not really, in the grand scheme, I don't care), is the swell of opinion on what should happen to an individual, because of what they say in a private conversation. What he said may have been disgusting and bigoted, but that's life. The only reason it was given any power, is because a huge portion of society decided to give it to him.

In the grand scheme of things, what he said is not that big of deal, except to those who wish to play some kind of perceived victim. There are many more instances of racism, that have profound effects on individuals on greater scales, that go unrecognized today and unfortunately, the underlying issues aren't discussed. Because of frivolous uproars like this one take precedent. Everyone gets to bow their chests, be offended and "punish" the bad guy. Life goes back to normal until the next Sterling, Zimmerman and then we'll have another beer summit.

You're hesitant to go along with groupthink (rightfully so), but ignoring the fact that sometimes the loudest prevailing opinion is the correct one. This was one of those times.

Not necessarily.

I think banning him was fine, but the mob decided that wasnt enough blood and demanded the NBA force him to sell. Whats worse is the same mob would have demanded penalties for any owner who didnt support the move had it come to a vote. The sheer vitriol coming from some talking heads towards anyone who didnt support the sale was almost as bad as what Sterling said.

"Banning" an owner without forcing him from his position of ownership would have been an ineffective punishment at best.

This is conjecture and wouldn't have affected the outcome.

Agreed! No doubt the old goat is a racist bigot but how that parlays into forcing him to sell the team is beyond me.

People are so PC its a joke! Most of them aren't PC for the right reason, they just want the street cred.

$$ reports coming out that 4 more NBA owners are in the process of recording racist remarks for "unauthorized" release $$

First, there's nothing in the article which indicates Donald has agreed to a sale.

Secondly, the NBA is on really weak ground demanding he sell the team. They stretched the owner's agreement's meaning to make it practically meaningless. Anytime you do that, it comes back to bite you in the arse later. It most likely will for the NBA later on.
