Arkansas is one of many (most) states which do not protect LGBT people against discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodation on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
After a marathon 10 hour city council meeting, Fayetteville city council passed protections for LGBT folks 6-2.
Here's the in game thread from last night.

More like Gayetteville.
amirite?
really, i am in full favor of having gays given the right to marry and carry on with life. don't agree with the lifestyle, but my morals should have little to do with laws affecting two consenting adults.
I DO NOT however like the nature of these laws because it's going to make it awfully hard to fire or give somebody a free choice in dealing with a homosexual as they see fit based on their performance or character. bigots and racists going to bigot and racist, but forcing people to go against their own code isn't ever the answer. i despise their views, but they are entitled to them. just hope they take a dirt nap sooner than later.
i think the laws that have gone on the books regarding the bakers or photographers choosing not to take gay customers as clients is incredibly unconstitutional and think that this sets up a slippery slope to not be able to treat gays as equals, just like affirmative action.

Arkansas is still a right to work state, so people can be fired for any reason. If a gay person gets fired and claims they were terminated because they're gay, the employer could just say they were fired for another reason.
I worked with a gay guy that got fired because he was a shitty employee, but he still filed a grievance that said he was fired for being gay, even though he had worked there for a decade and everyone knew he was gay. He didn't have a case because at the time you could fire a person in Arkansas just for being a homosexual.
Under this new law, he still wouldn't have a case because he was fired based on performance.
ETA: you can still fire a person in Arkansas for being gay, this law is just for Fayetteville.

Yep, Gayetteville fo sho.
People will be forced to bake gay wedding cakes against their will. The horror.

i understand the sentiment, as Texas is a right to work state as well. but now that guy can claim it's because he's gay and it's not as cut and dry on the firing.
case in point. my brother worked for a large retail paint chain as the store manager. His 3rd key was a gay, mexican woman. she was there when he arrived. cancerous attitude, mediocre at best performance. he tried a dozen times to fire her, but just couldn't. his boss said there is no way we can do that unless you get her written up enough. he started writing her up and she got everyone of them overturned with the minority gay thing complaint to HR.
now that is not indicative of any portion of the gay community and their work ethic and it's an anecdotal story. but to act like it won't be a factor moving forward is purposefully ignorant.

A great point made by one of our most liberal council people was this, paraphrased:
"I'm an architect. I'm also an atheist. I have been contracted to design sanctuaries, additions, and architectural elements for churches whose beliefs I sometimes find objectionable. Its a professional service, not and endorsement of a person or group's beliefs".
It was a very solid argument, IMO.

State law still trumps city law.

Not really valid. He chose to do it. He wasn't forced to by the government to render his services to organizations he doesn't align with.

Vaild because it demonstrates how most adults deal with others professionally in business.
At least those without a persecution complex. How many gay florists do you think are out there providing gay flowers to straight, Baptist weddings?

Only a dumbass would let the government "force" them to make a gay wedding cake if they don't want to. The person would basically have to say "I'm not making your cake because it's for a gay wedding."
