I mean with peoples attitudes today? With I don't care type attitude. Years ago you could pick a up a hitchhiker and it would be no issue. But now, it's dangerous. And what we see on tv. Everyone has just gone plump crazy

You are simply getting a media influx of the bad shite due to the surge in population in general and the rise in media itself.

Statistically speaking, you're safer than ever in a lot of crime areas.

But the spiking population is ultimately going to come to a head one day, and who knows what will happen then.

If you can see how things are changing more and more. I feel sorry for you. People's morals have even changed. Texting and driving and they get mad at you at a light..when you blow the horn at them. It's like no one cares. Even our president throwing temper tantrums on twitter. None of this would have happen years ago. And tv with these reality shows are even worse.

I'm amazed at the change in civility in the last 20 years, it's pretty frightening. Liberalism really is a mental disorder.

Pretty sure picking up a hitchhiker was always risky.

And hitchhikers are the least of our problems.

The world is doing fine.

Our society however has become increasingly intellectually lazy and hateful.

This is an astute observation. Because psychopaths constitute a steady 1%-4% of the population, any increase in the number of people equates to a proportional increase of the criminally insane. Since the area where a population resides cannot increase, the result is more psychopaths in a more densely occupied location.

Therefore, encounters with psychopaths become more common. Coincidentally, increases in population density bring more stressors for psychopaths, causing them to act on their impulses more often.

Conclusion: Small populations are better for people and the environment.

Scared? No...

...and it was never safe to be a hitchiker or pick up hitchhikers. Do you know about the Santa Rosa hitchhiker murders in the early 70s? How about the Manson Family? The Manson Family traveled via hitching. Just two easy examples...

Difference is the media didn't beat things in your head 24-7 about just how awful things are out there. They've always been awful. Forensics have improved dramatically to where murderers are often caught when they would never have been before modern technology.

My dad was driving home from Auburn in the early '60's and picked up a guy hitchhiking. My dad let him drive and he got in the backseat and slept. When the guy got to his house in Guntersville he woke my dad up and he drove the rest of the way home. Crazy

And years before that you were liable to get robbed on the highway even if you didn't stop for a hitchhiker.

Every generation thinks that the world is going to hell, but it was already hell from the very start.

And the reality of the 50's and 60's and back in the "good ole days" was not how Leave It To Beaver and I Love Lucy portrays the world. It was just a lot easier back then to put on a front to the outside world and hide the ugly stuff behind closed doors.

I would not want to see "the direction of what this world is going" change as I think the rotation and orbit are perfect for the maintenance of life on the planet. A change in direction? Well, that would be a real "scare".

Think of all the lives lost to wars (WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, etc.) and the struggle for blacks and women to gain equal rights in the 20th century. Think of all the notorious serial killers and criminals like Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, the Zodiac, Charles Manson, Al Capone, and John Dillinger. Think about the assassinations of JFK, RFK and MLK. Think how close we came to WW3 during the Cuban Middle Crisis.

Think about the 19th century when we fought a war against ourselves while a race was enslaved.

When it comes to violence and discrimination, the 21st century (at least so far) is like a Disney movie compared to previous centuries. You just hear about more now because nearly everyone has a camera in hand 24/7 and access to an audience of millions by pressing a few buttons.

With you brother.

I'm not scared, but I fear for our children.

The world doesn't want the moral restraints of religion. People want a "do as thou wilt" philosophy. Consequently, people are selfish and self-centered to the extreme.

Also, the world around us is just more dangerous. There are too many weapons of mass destruction possessed by too many people who want to do us harm. Weaponized diseases.
Eventually, terrorists, already motivated, will find a means to deliver them.
A nuclear blast in the atmosphere would disrupt the power grids throughout the world, resulting in hundreds of millions of deaths.

The population, in general, isn't prepared for catastrophes of this magnitude.
